Animal Charity Evaluators began in 2012 under the name Effective Animal Activism (EAA), as a division of the U.K. charity 80,000 Hours—part of the Centre for Effective Altruism, which works to promote the philosophy of effective altruism. Eitan Fischer founded EAA after realizing there was a need for a resource for those looking to give effectively to animals, as no other animal organization provi
ded evidence-based advice focused on total impact. Although our original focus was on creating discussion about tactics to help animals, this shifted towards an emphasis on creating quality educational and research content. EAA hired Executive Director Jon Bockman and merged with his charity Justice for Animals, thereby officially becoming a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Today, our mission is to find and promote the most effective ways to help animals. We have three main programs that help us achieve those goals: Research, Education, and Fundraising. Based on our current findings and available research, advocating for farmed animals seems to be the most effective way to help animals and prevent the largest amount of suffering. Over eight billion land animals (and 78 billion sea animals) are killed each year for the United States food supply. Even modest reductions in consumption of animal products can make a large difference when applied on a large scale. This is why our Top Charities are generally farmed animal advocacy groups.
