Alpha Project

Alpha Project Alpha Project is a nonprofit human services organization that serves over 4,000 individuals.

Since 1987, Alpha Project has been committed to providing meaningful opportunities to men and women motivated to change their lives through hard effort matched with the support of talented human service professionals. Over the past 25 years, Alpha Project has grown from a single program offering supportive employment to homeless men and women into an agency that spans all of San Diego County and r

eaches as far north as the Bay Area. While the agency has grown, its values have remained unchanged and with those values to guide it, today Alpha Project affects the lives of thousands of men and women each day, creating opportunities for disadvantaged individuals and families to lead lives of greater independence and self-determination. Alpha Project’s social service programs offer support designed to address the full range of needs for men and women with substance abuse disorders, histories of incarceration and other involvement with law enforcement, mental illness, physical disability and other special needs. Participants in those programs include working age men and women from throughout San Diego County, representing the ethnic and cultural richness characteristic of the area. These key programs and other services, including transportation, end-of-life support, counseling and many others, are designed to combat the cycle of poverty and dependence on the front end, by addressing the causes and immediate consequences of that cycle for men and women left out of the mainstream. While Alpha Project’s social service programs address the agency’s priorities on the front end, to close the widening gap at the back end that separates more and more working age adults and seniors from self-reliance, Alpha Project has amassed an inventory of permanent affordable housing totaling 698 units at six sites between Chula Vista in the south and Oakland in the north. Alpha Project’s permanent housing developments have won numerous awards for excellence including recognition from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development as “the best of the best” in affordable housing. In addition to high quality, safe, permanent housing at rents affordable to residents with low incomes, the various properties include such amenities as transportation shuttles, multi-station computer learning centers, community playgrounds and before and after-school programs. In 2012, Alpha Project will assume control of a 73-unit complex for low-income individuals in Oakland and will commence operation of a 134-bed interim housing program at San Diego’s World Trade Center, on 6th Avenue, downtown. The program will be part of a multi-pronged approach to combating homeless at one site, in the heart of the city, an undertaking without precedent in San Diego. The full-scale program at the World Trade Center will serve thousands of San Diegans in need each year, offering primary and psychiatric health care, drug and alcohol treatment, job preparation, referral and placement support, interim and permanent housing, daily meals and additional services. Alpha Project takes immense pride in how far it has come in the past quarter-century and it extends its thanks and the thanks of tens of thousands of men, women and children whose lives are forever transformed due to generous supporters like you who have made it all possible.

This client’s journey is a powerful example of resilience, determination, and hope. When she first arrived at the shelter, she was facing homelessness while caring for her two young daughters. Despite the challenges, she remained strong and focused, always putting her girls first and never losing sight of her goals.
Throughout her time in the program, she consistently demonstrated motivation and perseverance. She actively sought opportunities to improve her situation, whether by connecting with resources, working on her personal growth, or planning a better future for herself and her children. She never gave up, even during difficult moments, and continued to push forward with a positive mindset.
In addition to working toward stability, she is passionate about wellness and is currently pursuing certification as a yoga instructor. She dreams of one day opening her own yoga and Pilates studio, where she hopes to inspire others and give back to her community, something she has already been doing through her kindness, support, and willingness to uplift those around her.
Today, she has successfully transitioned into her own home, creating a safe and stable environment for her daughters. With Alpha Project's support, she also furnished her new space, turning it into a warm and welcoming home for her family.
She continues to be an inspiration to others, proving that with determination, support, and self-belief, lasting change is possible. The future ahead of her is full of promise, and there is no doubt she will continue to achieve great things.

After years of experiencing homelessness, Janilynn and her spouse Aaron have finally opened the door to their very own apartment. Their journey has been long and difficult, but together they celebrate a new chapter filled with hope and stability.
For several months, Janilynn and Aaron stayed at the Dreams for Change Lot Tent City, a safe haven during one of the most challenging periods of their lives. It was during this time that Janilynn was matched through the CES and approved for a Sponsored Based subsidy (SBS) .
With tears of joy, Janilynn received the keys to her new home. Overwhelmed with gratitude, she shared how much it meant to finally have a space of her own a place of peace, privacy, and possibility.
Thanks to the support of Alpha Project, Janilynn and Aaron were provided with essential items to begin their new life in comfort and dignity. They received a queen-size bed, as well as a kitchen and bathroom move-in kit, helping them settle in with the basic necessities they had gone without for so long.
We also want to recognize Baranski Rentals, a valued community partner who works hand-in-hand with us to support our clients. Baranski Rentals continues to show that they care deeply for the homeless community, helping make housing transitions smoother and with compassion.
Janilynn is overjoyed and deeply thankful to everyone who made this possible. Her journey reminds us that with compassion, collaboration, and persistence, lives can be transformed and that everyone deserves a safe place to call home.❤️

Once homeless, Justin and his wife, Kash Rose, are now thriving in permanent supportive housing at St. Teresa of Calcutta Villages. As their Alpha Project case manager, Al McGowen, connected them with Gently Hugged (clothing for a baby’s first year), which provided them with baby clothing and supplies. On June 9th, 2025, they welcomed a healthy baby boy. This family has gone from uncertainty to stability, living proof that housing changes lives. ❤️

Love lives here. ❤️

On Valentine's Day at Luther Tower, our residents gathered to share a warm meal, sweet treats, and even sweeter moments. From heart-shaped decorations to laughter around the tables, this celebration was a reminder that community, dignity, and connection matter.

At Alpha Project, we believe everyone deserves to feel seen, valued, and loved — not just today, but every day.

Thank you to everyone who helps make moments like this possible for our neighbors experiencing homelessness. 💕

As we welcome the New Year, our thoughts are with the hundreds of individuals who call the Alpha Project Shelter home. Due to the heavy rain and severe flooding we are experiencing, our shelter location has been impacted, and more than 300 residents are being evacuated for their safety.

Many of our residents have lost access to their belongings and are in urgent need of basic essentials. We are asking our community for support during this emergency. At this time, we are in need of:
- Clothing (Men & Women)
- Warm jackets
- Socks
- Blankets
- Ready-to-eat food and snacks

Every donation — big or small — makes a difference to someone facing uncertainty. If you are able to help or would like more information on how to donate or drop off items, we will be accepting donations at

The Recital Hall
2130 Pan American Plaza San Diego, CA 921001
1/1/2026 from 4PM to 10PM & starting 1/2/2026 from 10AM to 6PM.

Please contact 619-542-1877 or email [email protected] for any questions.

Thank you for standing with our residents during this difficult time. Together, we can bring warmth, safety, and hope into the New Year.

We wanted to recognize the incredible work Shantel and Janel consistently put into our family shelter. They create a warm, welcoming environment through thoughtful decorations and engaging activities that help our families feel at home. Their creativity, teamwork, and genuine care make a meaningful impact. They also helped bring a little holiday magic by welcoming Santa for an early visit with some of the children. We truly appreciate their dedication and the positive energy they bring to our team.❤️
