Dharma Voices for Animals

Dharma Voices for Animals Dharma Voices for Animals is the Only International Buddhist Animal Advocacy organization in the world.

The Buddha included non-human animals along with humans in the class of beings that are deserving of our compassion and non-harming action. The Western spiritual tradition – at least in its mainstream formulation – works on two levels of morality: a higher level that governs our treatment of human beings and a lower level that governs our treatment of animals. Thus, it seems to be morally acceptab

le to enslave animals for labor and entertainment and to imprison and slaughter them for food, fabric, and for medical research, while it would be morally repugnant to treat human beings the same way. Mainstream Western compassion protects the core interests of human beings while only tinkering around the edges of animals’ lives and suffering. This notion that animals need not be treated with compassion is alien to the Buddhadhamma. When discussing morality and compassion, The Buddha and Dharma teachers over the years have used the inclusive terms “living beings” and “sentient beings,” rather than the restrictive “human beings.” For example, the First Precept, “Do not kill,” has always been understood to apply to animals as well as human beings. In the Dhammapada, the Buddha told us that, “All beings tremble before danger, life is dear to all. When a person considers this, he does not kill or cause to kill.”

We in the twenty-first century Western Dharma community have often lost sight of the enormity of suffering we cause to non-human animals, most of which can be easily avoided. So many of us routinely eat meat, chicken, sea animals; wear animal products as clothing; and use personal hygiene and household products tested on animals or containing animal products. Sadly, most of the Dharma Centers have not set a good example. We at DVA hope to bring awareness to the suffering of animals caused and supported by our Community and Dharma Centers, provide reasonable alternatives to the actions that cause and support the suffering, and advocate on behalf of the animals for changes that will significantly reduce that suffering. By becoming a DVA Member at no cost you will support the efforts to raise awareness of the suffering of animals in the Dharma community.

Every month, Dharma Voices for Animals works to replace suffering with compassion through outreach in Buddhist communities around the world — transforming meals, hearts, and lives.

But this work is only possible when compassionate people step forward consistently.

Today, we are asking our community to become a monthly donor and help build a stable foundation for animals who depend on this movement to survive.

A monthly gift — even the cost of one meal — creates lasting change:
🐓 Fewer animals slaughtered
🕊 More compassionate meals served
☸ More Buddhist communities embracing ahimsa
💚 More lives saved every single month

Urgency matters because every delayed action means more suffering continues.

Please don’t wait for someone else to step forward.
Become a sustaining supporter today and help us create a world where compassion is practiced at every table.

''On March 27, DVA joined a volunteer effort to cook and serve free vegan “pho” (Vietnamese noodles) to patients and their caregivers at Cancer Hospital in Vietnam.

For many people facing long-term illness, especially those with limited financial means, a simple meal can mean so much more than just food. Some patients spend months, even years, in the hospital. With treatment costs already weighing heavily, a warm bowl of vegan pho in the morning can offer a small but meaningful sense of comfort and care.

Plant-based meals can also be especially supportive for those going through treatment. They are often easier to digest, rich in nutrients, and can help the body feel lighter during physically demanding times. While no single meal can replace medical care, providing wholesome, nourishing food is one small way to support both physical well-being and emotional comfort.
Outside major hospitals in Vietnam, it’s common to see volunteer groups quietly cooking and serving meals to those in need. These acts of kindness may seem simple, but they reflect a deep, ongoing commitment to supporting the community - something truly beautiful to witness.

For us at DVA, choosing plant-based food is not only about supporting people, but also about extending compassion to all beings. It’s a reminder that kindness can begin with something as small and everyday as a meal - one that causes no harm.''
