Beyond the Teams was created by a handful of retired Navy Seals who decided they wanted to do other “missions” on behalf of people who have great needs. It was never about talking about what they did in their past (jokingly referred to as the bow and arrow era), but instead just using their past abilities (and hard headedness) to take on difficult challenges in order to benefit other people. The use of their Seal title is merely a way to draw attention to the fundraising endeavor .
Their first fundraising mission was for VIP Neuro-rehabilitation Center in San Diego. These old guys, who are now all grandfathers, decided to dust off their bikes to join together in 2019 to raise funds for VIP’s new therapy equipment and patient scholarships. The clinic offers some of the most innovative therapies and equipment to those who suffer from neurological disorders, such as: spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, stroke, cerebral palsy, MS, and other dibilitating conditions. They rode from Virginia Beach to Ft.Pierce Florida and raised over $60,000 for the clinic.
One of the riders, Mike Charbonnet, has a son who became a patient of VIP in 2012 after a tragic parachuting accident. Mike’s son, David, was also asked to be the volunteer director of the clinic a few years after his accident. David (also a retired Seal) and his wife have run the business like champs ever since accepting the challenge. Because of this personal family connection, Beyond the Team’s riders were more than happy to make VIP the first benefactor of their fundraising efforts. The next fundraising mission is tentatively scheduled for May of 2021. It will involve extra veteran team members to paddle an outrigger canoe from Key West to Ft. Pierce, Florida. The support generated from the paddle will be to benefit the Navy UDT Seal Museum. The museum is hoping to expand and build another museum in San Diego, Ca. The Museum is filled with memorabilia and continues to inspire young and old, while also honoring those who have paid the ultimate price for our country.
