We have become accustomed to the simple red-versus-blue, liberal-versus-conservative goal posts that have been set up by the drivers of American politics.

We are trying to move beyond the false two-sided narrative to a real discussion — where thought leaders understand the importance of nuance and the sophistication that good policy actually requires.

It's a good thing the June 2 primary doesn’t belong to either party in California.

Every voter gets the same ballot. Every voter can choose any candidate. And independent voters don’t need permission from a party to matter.

The parties want voters to think the primary is their private contest.

It isn’t.

In California, the primary belongs to voters. (Full story in the comments.)

Rich in life and rich in vote. California is one of only three states where every voter - no matter their party - gets to help pick which two candidates advance to November. That's a privilege most of the country doesn't have.

It's especially valuable for independents. In closed-primary states, NPP voters get shut out entirely. In California, they're the ones who help decide who's on the November ballot in the first place. Primary is June 2.

That feeling when you remember California is one of only three states where you can vote for any candidate regardless of party. No closed primary, no party gatekeeping - just one ballot, every candidate, your call.

Independents feel that freedom the most. In closed-primary states, NPP voters get shut out entirely. In California, they're the ones who help decide which two candidates advance to November. Primary is June 2.

The party bosses want you in a neat little box. California said no. Every voter, every candidate, one ballot - and the top two advance to November regardless of party. That's the jungle.

That's why independents are the ones the parties fear most here. You can't be counted on to fall in line, and you can't be sorted into a column. In a closed-primary state, your vote doesn't even exist until November. In California, it's the one that helps decide who's on the ballot in the first place. Don't let them lock the cage.
June 2. VOTE!
