Great morning on the water!

Maxwell met Coach Michelle while attending a Navy Wounded Warrior adaptive sports camp last Spring. He went on to make Team Navy for the DOD Warrior Games Challenge this past June where Michelle was coaching Team Navy.

Today, Maxwell was able to apply everything he’s learned on the Concept2 to rowing on the water.
Thank you to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for the adaptive sports grant you provide to USRowing and the Freedom Rows program. Thank you to our community partner Coastal Virginia Community Rowing, Phillip Hines from the VB Sports and Rec commission and Councilman Chris Taylor from VB City Council for all of your hard work to get us back on the water.

We started working with Johnny back in 2018 when he was trying to make his first Team USA spot for the Invictus Games. He has since gone on to make two Invictus teams and medaled several times. Not only is Johnny a very active and accomplished athlete, but works tirelessly to help other veterans.

Virginia Beach Veterans Rowing invites you to join us, Concept 2, and athletes all over the world in showing your support for racial equality in rowing.

As part of C2’s 2022 Juneteenth Challenge, they will donate funds to programs that are leading the way in inclusion of athletes of color in the sport. One of these programs, Athletes Without Limits is located in the DC area and is our partner in adaptive military programing.

On this Sunday, June 19th, athletes wanting to show their support can row, ski, or bike 1900 meters and log their workout on Concept 2’s website to get credit. Workouts that take place on the water or snow count too!

Head to https://log.concept2.com/challenges/juneteenth for full details and to show your support by logging your 1900 meters!

On June 19, 1865, General Gordon Granger stood on a balcony in Galveston, Texas and declared that all previously enslaved people in Texas were now free. This day is now celebrated widely in America as Juneteenth, and remembered as a day of freedom and emancipation.
