🎉 Celebrating something this May? A quick safety note.

As graduation parties and other summer celebrations get underway, metallic balloons may seem like a fun, festive idea—but they can cause serious problems if they come into contact with power lines. It’s one of the many everyday risks highlighted during Electrical Safety Month. In recent years, metallic balloons have caused hundreds of outages in San Diego County. And some incidents have sparked dangerous fires.

The safety of the communities we live and work in is our highest priority. Learn how you can help prevent outages and fire risks, and about other seasonal safety reminders at sdgetoday.com/metallicballoonsafety

🌲 Don’t give fire a ladder.

Untrimmed tree limbs are one of the most overlooked hazards on your property. They can create a direct path for fire to climb from the ground straight into the canopy.

Here’s what to do now:

âś… Limb trees up to create space between the ground and canopy

âś… Clear debris and vegetation beneath your trees

âś… Keep branches away from your roof and chimney

3 Minute Bag: Your Under-the-Bed Core Supply Kit

If you are ever faced with an “evacuate immediately” situation in the event of a wildfire, having a “3 Minute Bag” for each family member could be a lifesaver. This is the core supply kit that is stored in a convenient and easily accessible location (ideally under each family member’s bed) should you have to evacuate your home in three minutes or less. At a minimum this kit should include:

Clothing and other items to protect you from flying embers and smoke. This includes clothes made of natural materials, head covering or hat, gloves, sturdy shoes, safety glases/goggles, and a face mask/bandana.

Gear to make your way to safety, including a flashlight and whistle (to call for help).
A thumbdrive with copies of important documents including identification, insurance, and property deeds or titles.

Preparing your property, home, and family for wildfire is the first step to wildfire resilience. This week is Wildfire Preparedness Week, so there’s no better time to get started. We’ve got three easy steps you can take right now - without overloading your “to do” list on a Monday!

1. Register for emergency alerts so that you know what to do in the event of a wildfire. Sign up for Reverse 9-1-1 at AlertSD.org/Register and download the Genasys Protect app.

2. Update your family evacuation plan using CalFire’s Ready, Set, Go framework. View it online: bit.ly/4ungy6x.

3. Learn more about the wildfire hazard in Poway and how you can reduce your personal risk at our free Public Safety Workshop on Wednesday, May 27 (evening) or Saturday, May 30 (morning). Look for the registration link under Wildfire Safety and Evacuation Awareness at poway.org/communityeducation.
