A lot of families know about IHSS. Far fewer know there may be other ways to get paid for the care they’re already providing.

California has several programs that may allow a parent, spouse, relative, or other family member to be paid as a caregiver — and some of them have nothing to do with traditional IHSS.

Depending on your family member’s eligibility and needs, options may include:

IHSS • WPCS • Regional Center Respite • Self-Determination (SDP) • Participant-Directed Services • Participant-Directed Transportation

Each program works differently. Who can be paid, what services they can provide, and how someone qualifies all depend on the program.

And here’s something many families don’t realize: qualifying for one program doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t receive services through another. In some situations, families can use multiple programs as long as they aren’t paying for the same service at the same time.

We put the six options together in one simple guide because families shouldn’t have to accidentally stumble across programs that could help them.
