On September 17, 1976, NASA unveiled the Space Shuttle Enterprise (OV-101) at Rockwell International in Palmdale, California.
Originally planned to be named Constitution, a nationwide letter-writing campaign by Star Trek fans persuaded NASA to honor the iconic fictional starship instead. The rollout ceremony brought together series creator Gene Roddenberry and nearly the entire principal cast of The Original Series, including Leonard Nimoy, Nichelle Nichols, James Doohan, George Takei, Walter Koenig, and DeForest Kelley, celebrating the momentous bridge between science fiction and real-world engineering.
Though Enterprise never flew in space, it played a crucial role in the Approach and Landing Tests (ALT), helping NASA gather essential aerodynamic data. Today, it resides at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City, continuing to inspire generations. The shuttle’s name and legacy stand as a testament to storytelling’s power to shape history.
