Project Mercy Baja - Community Development Projects Inc. Our Mission is the improvement of living standards and quality of life for impoverished families by building basic but sturdy homes in Tijuana, Mexico.

Migrants from the interior of Mexico move to the borderland between Baja California, Mexico and California, U.S.A. in the hope of building a better life for themselves and their families. When a new neighborhood is opened up to the public by the government there is a rush to acquire land and put down roots. Families use whatever funds they have to put up scrap wood shacks with dirt floors and roof

s that leak when it rains. Project Mercy addresses the improvement of inadequate living conditions in these “colonias” by building basic but sturdy homes

The Mexican families on the Project Mercy waiting list for a home work on a “sweat-equity” basis to level land lay concrete slabs and assist the US volunteers that construct the houses. Volunteer groups and individuals use donated funds to build secure homes. Teamed with the willing hands of Mexican program participants, men, women and children all work alongside their U.S. counterparts, bridging the cultural gap and bringing much needed assistance to communities in dire need. As a result of working in the same community for an extended period, we are now not only able to use local Mexican skilled labor to do completion work on houses that some groups are not able to finish, but to also build houses on their own. Thus the local community is benefiting from the Project Mercy program teaching construction skills to local residents.

Esperanza Perez Aparicio migrated to Tijuana from Chiapas several years ago in search of job opportunities. They lived in a typical scrap wood shack with a dirt floor and a rickety roof, unstable and invaded by insects and mice. We are so very sad to report that Esperanza recently died of cancer and the girls are being taken care of by an Aunt who now lives with them. We are so grateful to Mike and everyone for stepping forward at very short notice and making Esperanza’s dream come true for her daughters.

Esperanza Perez Aparicio migrated to Tijuana from Chiapas several years ago in search of job opportunities. Her husband passed away 3 years ago. She worked nights so that she could afford to send her youngest 9 year old daughter, Dulce, to school. Guillermina, her 15 year old daughter, wants to join...

Carlsbad Rotary "Service Above Self" -

Despite the threat of impending rain, on January 24 Carlsbad Rotary decided to follow the Rotary motto "Service above Self". This past weekend over thirty members and youth drove to eastern Tijuana, Mexico, to build a home with their construction leader and friend, Mike Meziere.

The first time I met the Hernandez Rendon family my heart jumped a little.......

This past weekend on October 25 two groups traveled to Tijuana.

The Buckley and Nelson families and friends, under the direction of long time leaders Chris and Fritz, built two houses for a couple of very appreciative families.

At the same time, a few hundred yards away, Mike Meziere worked with members and volunteers of Incarnation Lutheran Church of Poway to build a third home for the Espinoza Lugo family of five.

As summer fades into fall, the Project Mercy Baja team has been busy visiting families on our waitlist for a new home.

The requests are many. Some come from families in long-established neighborhoods, while others are from brand-new colonias carved out of the land just recently. No matter where they live, the need is urgent—each family longs for the safety and security of a solid house.
