Tree San Diego

Tree San Diego Tree San Diego is increasing San Diego County's urban forest with the right trees, in the right place

Tree San Diego is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization that works to benefit the greater San Diego region by helping provide a healthier place to live, work and play. We work collaboratively with other organizations who contribute to environmental and human sustainability. We recognize that quality urban trees are one part a system that includes natural factors (other flora, fauna, soil, air, clima

te, etc.) and human factors (human health, hardscape, transportation, buildings, etc.). Tree San Diego works to benefit all of the county’s 18 cities, unincorporated areas, military bases, and Native American reservations. Get involved and help make San Diego County a healthier place to live, work and play.

Better together under the trees. 🌳

A huge thank you to the San Diego Regional Climate Collaborative for joining us on a Tree Trek through Kate Sessions Memorial Park! It was a great opportunity to connect with fellow climate advocates while exploring one of San Diego’s most beloved green spaces — one tree at a time.

Grateful for partners who share our passion for a greener, more resilient San Diego. Looking forward to more collaboration ahead! 💚

90 native plants. One hillside. A canyon coming back to life. 🌿

The Spring 2026 Treejectory+ Cohort hit the slopes of Swan Canyon with San Diego Canyonlands for a hands-on native habitat restoration field day — and the results speak for themselves.

From Toyon and Lemonadeberry to California Sunflower and Buckwheat, every plant in the ground is a step toward a healthier, more biodiverse San Diego. Native species support local wildlife, reduce erosion, and thrive in our SoCal climate — no extra water, no shortcuts.
This work was done on the unceded ancestral territory of the Kumeyaay Nation, guided by the principles of traditional ecological knowledge. 🙏

Proud of this cohort and grateful to our partners San Diego Canyonlands for making it happen. 💚

1,000 free trees. One month. Let’s grow San Diego. 🌳

This Earth Month, we’re bringing our Plant It Forward campaign to neighborhoods across San Diego County — distributing 1,000 climate-resilient trees to residents who need canopy most. Fruit trees, native species, shade trees — selected to fit each community’s needs.
Here’s where we’ll be:

📍 April 4 — Allied Gardens
📍 April 10 — Coastal Roots Farm
📍 April 18 — Campo Band of Mission Indians
📍 April 24 — City of Chula Vista
📍 April 25 — City of National City

All events are free and open to the community. Register with the link in the bio or here: https://bit.ly/plantitforward2026

Thank you to our incredible supporters: Cox Communications, Arbor Day Foundation, Guild Mortgage Company, and LPA Design Studios.

You planted it. You watered it. And look at it now. 🌳

A huge thank you to our Leafing Our Legacy recipients who are showing up for their trees — and for their neighborhoods. Seeing the progress firsthand is exactly why we do this work.

Every tree you’re growing is adding shade, cleaning air, and making San Diego a little more livable for everyone around you. That’s real impact, and it starts with you.

Keep an eye out — more trees are on the way. 👀 Our next Leafing Our Legacy distribution is coming soon. Stay connected for dates and details. 🌿

Last month, Tree San Diego volunteers joined forces with Lakeside River Park Conservancy to stake 722 native willow cuttings into the Lakeside riverbed — no nursery, no transplanting, just branches finding their way back to life.

Over two events, 44 volunteers helped push this restoration project past 3,475 stakes planted. The goal? 6,500 native willows to stabilize riverbanks, filter water, and shelter the wildlife — and people — who call this place home.

The project is resting for bird nesting season, but the roots are already growing. 🌱

🌳 Meet the 3–30–300 Rule — a simple way to picture what a healthy, equitable city should look like:

👀 3 trees in view from your home, school, or work
🌿 30% tree canopy in every neighborhood (cooler streets + healthier communities)
🚶 300 meters to a quality park (about a 5-minute walk)

These benchmarks help cities track progress, close canopy gaps, and prioritize neighborhoods that face the most heat. Want to take action? Check your neighborhood’s Tree Equity Score at treeequityscore.org and share what you find — then advocate for shade where it’s needed most. 🌱

Meet the golden medallion tree (Cassia leptophylla)—a tropical-looking showstopper that actually loves Southern California’s dry, sunny climate. 💛🌳
With its wide, shady canopy and huge clusters of bright yellow summer blooms, it’s quickly becoming a favorite street and yard tree for heat- and drought-prone neighborhoods. Have you spotted one of these “Cinderella” trees lighting up your block?
