Ray Kim, MD of Stanford University School Medicine, presents an algorithm, the Steatosis-Associated Fibrosis Estimator (SAFE), developed to detect clinically significant fibrosis in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (MASLD formarly known as NAFLD). It is effective at detecting chronic liver disease from all causes with or without [MASLD] in the general population, according the results of a US population-based study. The algorithm was designed for use in primary care to help slow the steep rise in liver disease burden. “Primary care doctors need to engage with the issue and have appropriate tools to identify people with liver disease."
The SAFE score can be used to detect chronic liver disease regardless of steatosis in the general population, offering the possibility for earlier detection in primary care.
