Mulberry Trees and Sulcata’s

1. Safe, Edible Leaves

* Mulberry leaves are generally considered safe and nutritious for sulcata tortoises.
* The leaves contain fiber, calcium, and other nutrients that can be part of a varied diet.
* Many tortoises enjoy eating both fresh leaves and fallen leaves.

2. Provides Natural Shade

* Sulcatas need access to shade, especially during hot California summers.
* A mature mulberry tree creates a large canopy that helps keep parts of the enclosure cooler.

3. Fallen Leaves and Branches

* Dropped leaves provide natural forage opportunities.
* Pruned branches can be offered as enrichment and browse.

4. Fast Growing

* Mulberry trees grow relatively quickly compared to many shade trees, making them useful for creating shelter in a younger tortoise habitat.

5. Deep Root System

* Established mulberries are fairly drought tolerant and can handle the dry conditions common in Southern California.

A few cautions:

* The sweet berries can attract ants, rodents, birds, and raccoons.
* Fallen berries can make walkways messy.
* Young trees should be protected because sulcatas are surprisingly strong and may damage the trunk or roots while grazing or digging.

For a sulcata enclosure, many keepers consider mulberry one of the better tortoise-friendly trees, along with species like Desert Willow and Texas Ebony. If you’re planting specifically for food and shade, mulberry is often near the top of the list.

🐢 Help protect your shelled family members! 🐢

Join us for the Turtle & Tortoise Microchip Clinic hosted by the San Diego Humane Society on Saturday, May 23rd from 10 AM – 2 PM in San Diego.

Microchipping is one of the best ways to help lost turtles and tortoises make it back home safely. Every year, countless sulcatas and other reptiles are surrendered, abandoned, or escape from their homes. A microchip provides permanent identification and can make all the difference in a reunion.

Meet Bernie 💚🐢

Bernie is one of our newest rescue residents, and his story is heartbreaking. This sweet 75 lb Sulcata tortoise appears to have suffered severe shell damage from improper heat lamp use before being abandoned by his previous owner. 😔

The good news — Bernie has been fully vet checked and officially cleared for adoption! Now he’s looking for the loving forever home he truly deserves.

Because of his past injuries, Bernie will need an attentive adopter who understands his special care needs:
☀️ Access to natural shade at all times
☀️ Safe, supervised sun exposure (“sun baths”)
☀️ Proper temperature regulation without overhead heat lamps
☀️ A spacious, secure outdoor environment

Why we DO NOT recommend heat lamps for Sulcatas 🚫💡

Sulcata tortoises are extremely prone to shell burns from overhead heat bulbs. Unlike some reptiles, they do not always recognize when they are overheating and can sit under a heat source too long, causing serious shell damage and long-term health problems — exactly what likely happened to Bernie.

Instead of heat lamps, Sulcata enclosures should be heated using:
✅ Radiant heat panels
✅ Ceramic heat emitters used safely and at proper distances
✅ Heated tortoise houses/sheds
✅ Pig blankets or under-structure ambient heating systems
✅ Properly insulated nighttime shelters

The goal is to safely warm the environment, not create harsh direct heat on the shell.

Bernie has already been through so much, but despite everything, he remains gentle, resilient, and deserving of a second chance. 💚

If you think you can provide Bernie with the safe and loving home he deserves, please contact us about adoption information today. Let’s help this big guy finally get the life he should have always had. 🐢✨

🐢Every year, countless Sulcata tortoises are abandoned, surrendered, or neglected because people don’t realize how large, strong, and long-lived they truly are. These amazing animals can grow over 100 pounds, require large outdoor spaces, specialized diets, and can live for decades. Sadly, many are purchased as tiny, cute babies without understanding the lifelong commitment involved.

That’s why adopting instead of shopping matters.

When you adopt, you’re giving a second chance to an animal that genuinely needs a safe, loving home. Rescue organizations across Southern California are overwhelmed with Sulcatas needing proper care, larger enclosures, medical attention, and families who are prepared for their unique needs.

By choosing adoption, you help reduce neglect, prevent unnecessary breeding, and support animals already waiting for homes instead of creating demand for more baby tortoises to be sold.

At our rescue, we work hard to provide safe placement, education, and lifelong support for these incredible animals. Every adoption changes a life — not just for the tortoise, but for the family who welcomes them home.

Please remember: research before bringing home any exotic animal, and whenever possible… adopt, don’t shop. 🐢❤️

🐢 Brumation: What It Means for Your Tortoise or Turtle 💤

As temperatures drop, many tortoises and some turtles enter a natural state called brumation—similar to hibernation, but specifically for reptiles. During this time, their metabolism slows way down, they eat very little (or not at all), and spend most of their time resting.

🌿 Why is brumation important?
Brumation plays a key role in your reptile’s overall health. It helps regulate hormones, supports natural behaviors, and is often necessary for successful breeding in mature animals. For many species, it’s simply part of their biological rhythm.

❄️ How to help your pet through brumation:
✔️ Make sure they are healthy before brumation begins (no illness, good weight)
✔️ Gradually reduce food intake as temperatures drop
✔️ Provide a cool, safe, and stable environment (species-specific temps matter!)
✔️ Ensure access to fresh water at all times to prevent dehydration
✔️ Avoid disturbing them too much—this is their time to rest

🌞 When they wake up… what’s next?
As your tortoise or turtle becomes more active:
✨ Slowly increase temperatures and lighting
✨ Offer fresh food and hydration (they’ll be hungry!)
✨ Give them a soak to help rehydrate and stimulate appetite
✨ Monitor for any signs of illness or weight loss

💚 Remember: Not all species brumate, and not all pets should. If you’re unsure, always check what’s best for your specific tortoise or turtle.

Brumation can feel a little scary, but it’s
completely natural—and with proper care, your shelled friend will wake up happy and healthy!
