Mulberry Trees and Sulcata’s
1. Safe, Edible Leaves
* Mulberry leaves are generally considered safe and nutritious for sulcata tortoises.
* The leaves contain fiber, calcium, and other nutrients that can be part of a varied diet.
* Many tortoises enjoy eating both fresh leaves and fallen leaves.
2. Provides Natural Shade
* Sulcatas need access to shade, especially during hot California summers.
* A mature mulberry tree creates a large canopy that helps keep parts of the enclosure cooler.
3. Fallen Leaves and Branches
* Dropped leaves provide natural forage opportunities.
* Pruned branches can be offered as enrichment and browse.
4. Fast Growing
* Mulberry trees grow relatively quickly compared to many shade trees, making them useful for creating shelter in a younger tortoise habitat.
5. Deep Root System
* Established mulberries are fairly drought tolerant and can handle the dry conditions common in Southern California.
A few cautions:
* The sweet berries can attract ants, rodents, birds, and raccoons.
* Fallen berries can make walkways messy.
* Young trees should be protected because sulcatas are surprisingly strong and may damage the trunk or roots while grazing or digging.
For a sulcata enclosure, many keepers consider mulberry one of the better tortoise-friendly trees, along with species like Desert Willow and Texas Ebony. If you’re planting specifically for food and shade, mulberry is often near the top of the list.
