1/15/2020 Update:

Sean has been slowly recovering from his last round of surgeries but has been extremely weak and in tons of pain. It was worrying me (Matt) a lot because I hadn’t heard much from him. As friends of his know -- that exuberance is an unstoppable force! But he’s just been sleeping a lot, has been weaker than he expected, and has been laying low to deal with the pain. I deeply hope the sleep is a good thing. He wasn’t sleeping much right after his last heart surgery and that had me seriously concerned. Sleep is the ultimate healer -- I hope it is working its magic.

Soon his next round of surgeries will begin -- and here is where the expenses are set to ratchet up -- tests, surgeries (every 3-4 months for the next few years), meds, hospital visits, more tests, more surgeries. To paraphrase what Sean wrote in a recent Facebook post -- this week starts the next round of his journey -- multiple doctor visits, tests, fresh results of all the trauma he experienced over the holidays, possible extreme increases in medications, and scheduling the next rounds of the vein and heart procedures. “It’s ok though because I’ll never give up the fight...never.”

Your help is the way he can continue to fight. Please continue to share and to find it in your hearts and pocketbooks to donate something -- no matter how big or small. Lastly, continue to vocalize your support to Sean. He thrives off of your love.

As a "P.S." I also want to communicate that Sean is doing everything he can to get help from the state (of Nevada) but the process is extremely slow -- 12 to 20 months -- and there is no guarantee he will get any assistance at all. If any of you are experts in this area who can move the needle (terrible use of an idiom, in this case, I know) please reach out to me, Christian, or Sean.

What would you do if you found out you had a rare disease and wanted to live? If you wanted to fight the disease, but didn’t have the money do it? What would you do if you were faced with a choice between paying for basic needs, like rent and food, and paying for the tests and surgeries that keep you alive? These are the choices Sean is having to face -- choices that have literally bankrupted him. Like any responsible person, Sean had insurance through his employer, and has COBRA now that he cannot work. But he can’t stay in-network to get the specialty care he needs to fight this rare disease -- ARVD -- or to treat the entanglement of conditions associated with it. Not to mention that COBRA is expensive and only treats a very specific blueprint of care. Do we really want someone to die (who desperately wants to live) because they couldn’t afford to see the handful of doctors who know how to treat ARVD? Do we really want someone to lose the roof over their head or not be able to afford groceries because they want to battle for their life?

The bottom line is that nobody should be forced to make these types of decisions, but Sean is. He wants a normal life again, and in the process of getting there, naturally wants a roof over his head, food to eat, and to pay his bills. In addition, Sean is also not just fighting for his own life, but for anyone who has, or may encounter this. To bring awareness to a congenital disease, and the web of associated conditions that make it difficult to treat.

Please share. And if you can spare anything to help Sean please donate. Lastly, reach out to Sean with your well wishes. The money that has come in so far has helped him stay in his apartment, keep his insurance, and start to chip away at the co-pays for all the treatment he has already had to get over the last several years.

Erin, Cedar, and I got to visit him this past weekend and we're happy to see a new glimmer of hope.

I'll post an official update to our GoFundMe campaign tomorrow, but in a nutshell, Sean Lashgari's surgery went well yesterday, they found the arrhythmia, but he is battling pericarditis -- inflammation of the pericardium. According to Sean this hurts like hell, but fortunately they caught it early and (fingers crossed) it's unlikely it will escalate. The other thing he mentioned was how grateful he was for the GoFundMe campaign. Before we started this he had $130 left to his name after paying rent and his insurance premium -- no way to pay rent next month, no way to pay for insurance (that he would lose), and no way to pay for any more hospital visits or prescriptions. We have buoyed him. This is amazing. And I'm hopeful we can continue towards meeting our goal. It's admittedly lofty, but it is also unbelievable how expensive his treatments are -- even with insurance. Sean continues to need our help so that he can continue to devote all his energy to one day living a normal life. I truly believe he can get there -- but he needs our help.
