Our chapter currently has 170 members extending from South of Ventura to the CA/MX border, and East to include NV and AZ. NNCASC members attended the Memorial Day Ceremony at Miramar National Cemetery (MNC)on Sunday, May 24, 2026. The Miramar National Cemetery Support Foundation & MNC conducted their ceremony in the recently dedicated amphitheater.

Following the ceremony, NNCASC members present gathered at the Navy Nurse Corps Memorial to pay tribute to the 28 Navy Nurses who are buried at MNC. As each name was read, members took turns placing a rose petal in a collective bowl. In addition, NNCASC members & other local Navy Nurses who are buried at Ft. Rosecrans & Arlington National Cemetery, were also remembered.

A special remembrance was made for our sister Army Nurse, CPT Diane Carlson Evans, Vietnam nurse 68-69 who passed away May 20, 2026. She also spearheaded the design & placement of the Vietnam Women's Memorial in Washington, DC.

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Diane Carlson Evans, Army nurse, Vietnam veteran, tireless advocate, and a force who forever changed how our Nation recognizes our Veterans.

Like thousands of women during the Vietnam War, Diane answered her Nation’s call with courage and conviction. She served as an Army nurse from 1968–1969 at the 71st Evacuation Hospital in Pleiku and the burn unit of the 36th Evacuation Hospital in Vung Tau, caring for the wounded in the midst of war. Reflecting on her decision to serve, Diane once said, “I just felt it was my responsibility. I thought if my brothers should go, so did I.”

But Diane’s service did not end when she came home.

Diane was a steadfast advocate for Vietnam veterans and she was especially determined to ensure women who served would also be recognized and included in our Nation’s history. Unwilling to let the 265,000 women who served during the Vietnam War be forgotten, Diane founded the Vietnam Women’s Memorial and led the decades-long effort to ensure women’s service would finally be honored and remembered on our Nation’s landscape. Her determination, resilience, and unwavering belief in the importance of recognition inspired generations of veterans and changed history.

Because of Diane, countless women veterans finally received the recognition they so deeply deserved and saw themselves reflected in our Nation’s history for the very first time.

In recognition of her extraordinary leadership and lifelong dedication to military women, the Military Women’s Memorial was honored to present Diane with the Margaret Chase Smith Leadership Award during our 2024 National Women Veterans Recognition Day celebration.

Diane will be deeply missed by the military community and by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

We extend our deepest condolences to Diane’s loved ones, friends, fellow veterans, and the many people whose lives she touched.

It is our privilege to preserve and share Diane’s story of service, ensuring future generations will know and remember her story, her courage, and her unwavering dedication to those who served our Nation.

CA Veterans Home Chula Vista Celebrates Founder's Day

The CA Veterans Home Chula Vista (CVVH) celebrated their 26th Founder's Day anniversary, since opening May 13, 2000, with a western themed event & barbeque on Saturday, May 16, 2026. The CVVH is home to 205 residents, most veterans of WWII, Korea, Vietnam & Iraq wars & conflicts.

NNCASC has supported the CVVH throughout the years as part of its Veteran Community Outreach program. During COVID, NNCASC members prepared valentines for each of the residents & these were delivered, along with a trunkload of puzzles & games. CVVH has also been the recipient of our end of year donations to veteran organizations.

The CVVH is supported by the Chula Vista Veterans Home Support Foundation (CVVHSF) a 501(c)(3). One of the residents of the home is a member of the Foundation & shares residents' perspectives. Two NNCASC members are also on the Foundation: Bertie McCoy & Nancy Owen.

Please join us in welcoming WCC’s Chandler.
Named in honor of United States Navy Nurse Corps Lieutenant Rebecca Chandler (Baker).

LT Chandler was inspired to become a Navy nurse after her brothers joined the Navy during World War II. Born in Cairo, Illinois during the Great Depression, she grew up amid hardship especially after her father’s untimely death. She learned resilience early on as her family worked together to survive. As World War II began, Rebecca was more determined than ever to achieve her goal of becoming a registered nurse (RN). After earning her RN license in 1952, she joined the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps during the Korean War.

LT Chandler began her career at the Naval Hospital in St Albans, NY where she worked in medicine, surgery and the operating room (OR). The following year she received orders to the hospital ship USS Consolation (AH-15) where she cared for wounded service members during Pacific operations and endured typhoons crashing across the bow while transporting patients between Korea and the Naval Hospital in Yokosuka, Japan. She later served at the Naval Hospital in Guam in both the OR and newborn nursery. It was here that she met her future husband, a Navy physician. Together they shared 59 years of marriage, six children and over nine different duty stations.

It is with tremendous pride that we name WCC’s Chandler in honor of United States Navy Nurse Corps Lieutenant Rebecca Chandler (Baker).
