We are all confronted by difficult times and now growing global health and economic crisis with COVID-19 spreading out of control. Worldwide billions are full of anxiety and fear, hoping and praying they or their family and friends are spared infection. And billions to are bored out of their minds while navigating a strange new world of quarantine!
So, as the biggest world crisis since world war II ensues, instead of banding together to collectively find new solutions to our many global challenges and find new paths to better health, we instead are all too often turning to “Netflix and chill’ or online gaming to ease the stress. We might better be asking ourselves: in a time of crisis like this, how can we band together, using the magic of digital communication to work together for answers?
Science and technology is our vehicle to find our way. Let’s band together!
Science and technology is the answer for us. Let's use this time to band together and put our available resources to their greatest possible use.
Thinking of a few specific ideas that we could start with right now from our couches that can significantly change our risk of infection and worse from COVID-19 and those that will undoubtedly come in the future. Let's identify a few key areas where we could concentrate our collaborative digital efforts and change the world forever forward.
The first is through distributed computing. A couple of weeks ago there was an advertisement from Nvidia, that advertisement suggested that all computer gamers and high-end Nvidia graphics card owners unite. Those who have incredibly powerful modern GPUS such as the Nvidia GeForce 10XX TI or 20XX TI series should immediately put them to use through an unparalleled distributed computing effort to fight COVID-19 with the folding@home project.
Last night as I was sitting at my computer trying to use this program, wondering how long it would take to find answers, thinking about how I could network my other computers, wondering how to get more people to do this. I thought to myself, due to a sudden absence of work my small band of freelancers have the time and resources to promote this right now! So here we are, on your screen saying “let's do this.”
Secondly, how many times have you yourself been at some government agency and thought to yourself this is incredibly unsanitary, incredibly inefficient, or incredibly wasteful? As science has now recorded a drastic reduction in global greenhouse gas emissions over the last couple of weeks it has become even harder to keep one's head in the sand. We ARE destroying our planet! Every time we get in the car to go to work, or go to the store, or to do anything that involves a few thousand pounds of steel being propelled around town we ARE contributing to yet another growing global emergency. So why shouldn't we use this downtime to make a permanent change?
Third, as science is an answer to our current crisis. Ask yourself this question, how many incredibly brilliant minds are sitting at home right now doing nothing? How can we presently use this distributed mind power for projects similarly innovative to folding@home? I love science and I can get lost in it but I am not a scientist so that is not a question to answer here.
So let's do it. Spread more ideas. Ban together as a worldwide digital community. Use this downtime to fight WW3 against COVID-19.
