The New York Times headline simply says: "The Trump administration will pull out of civil rights settlements that aim to ensure equal opportunities to trans students."
It sounds like a bureaucratic policy shift. It sounds like paperwork.
It is NOT paperwork.
Let me explain exactly what a "civil rights settlement" is, and what this administration is actively doing to vulnerable children right now.
When a transgender child is relentlessly bullied at school—when they are shoved into lockers, when they are physically assaulted in the hallways, or when a school board forces a 14-year-old to change for gym class in a literal janitor's closet—the federal government is supposed to step in.
Under previous administrations, the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights would investigate these schools.
They would find that the school was violating the civil rights of that child. And they would force the school to sign a legally binding settlement—an agreement that guaranteed the school would protect that specific student, allow them to use the correct bathroom, and stop the abuse.
These settlements were lifelines. For many of these kids, it was the only thing standing between them and daily torment. It was the government stepping in to say, "We will protect you."
Today, Donald Trump's administration decided to tear those lifelines up.
They aren't just changing their policy for the future. They are actively pulling out of existing settlements.
They are looking at the case of a trans kid who finally got the right to use the nurse's bathroom without being harassed, and they are voiding the agreement.
They are looking at schools that were placed under federal monitoring for ignoring the horrific bullying of trans youth, and they are letting them off the hook.
They are telling every school district in the country: You are free to abuse these children again. The federal government will not stop you.
Think about the sheer cruelty of that.
It is one thing to pass a sweeping, discriminatory law. It is another thing entirely to go through the files, find the names of specific, marginalized children who fought for years to simply exist safely in their schools, and strip away their protections one by one.
Transgender youth are already terrified.
Since January 2025, they have watched the President of the United States declare that the government will only recognize "two immutable sexes." They have watched this administration systematically target their health care, their right to exist in public spaces, and their safety.
And now, they have to go to school tomorrow knowing that the legal shield protecting them from their abusers was just shredded by their own president.
This is a targeted, federally backed attack on kids who are just trying to survive high school.
They want the headlines to sound like boring legal jargon so you won't pay attention. They want you to read "civil rights settlements" and scroll away.
Do not look away.
We have to make sure every single person understands exactly what this administration is doing to vulnerable kids.
