El Centro Comunitario de Recursos para Padres (CPRC, por sus siglas en inglés) de California Hands & Voices, CARES (Comunidad, Abogacía, Recursos, Empoderamiento, Suporte), se dedica a empoderar a las familias con n

iños y adultos jóvenes con discapacidades de una manera respetuosa y sin prejuicios. Nuestra meta es desarrollar la capacidad de las familias y las personas con discapacidades desde el nacimiento hasta los 26 años para ayudarlos a navegar la educación especial y otros sistemas de servicios. Estamos guiados por padres y brindamos a las familias los recursos, las redes y la información para prepararlos para los desafíos de criar a un niño con discapacidades. Nuestro alcance comunitario, colaboración entre padres y profesionales, y esfuerzos de defensa se centran en permitir que los niños y adultos jóvenes sean auto defensores y que esten preparados para llevar una vida adulta productiva e independiente en la mayor medida posible. Mission:
California Hands & Voices’ CPRC, CARES (Community, Advocacy, Resources, Empowerment Support), is dedicated to empowering families with children and young adults with disabilities in a respectful and non-judgmental manner. We are parent-driven and provide families with the resources, networks, and information to prepare them for the challenges of raising a child with disabilities. Our outreach activities, parent/professional collaboration, and advocacy efforts are focused on enabling children and young adults to be effective self-advocates prepared to lead productive, independent adult lives to the maximum extent possible.

📅 Becoming My Child’s Most Effective Advocate! (English)

Strong advocacy skills are critical as you work to ensure your child benefits from their education. In this workshop, parents will learn practical steps to effectively advocate for their child’s needs.

As an equal partner in your child’s education, it is important to clearly communicate your views and concerns with the school team and other school personnel. This session explores communication styles, listening skills, organization strategies, and useful tools and resources to help keep communication between home and school on the right track.

Remember — you are an equal partner in your child’s education.

This training will cover:
• What an advocate is and why advocacy matters
• Six essential advocacy skills
• Tips for effective communication in meetings and in writing (emails and letters)
• What to do when you disagree with the school team

Don’t miss this workshop and the opportunity to strengthen your advocacy skills and become a more effective member of your child’s IEP team, supported by the protections of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Strong advocacy skills are critical as you work to ensure your child benefits from their education. In this workshop, parents will learn practical steps to effectively advocate for their child’s needs.

El término “IEP SMART” describe metas del IEP que son específicas, medibles, utilizan palabras de acción, son realistas y relevantes, y tienen un tiempo determinado.

SMART significa:
• S – Específico
• M – Medible
• A – Usar palabras de acción
• R – Realista y relevante
• T – Con tiempo determinado

Los IEP se desarrollan a partir de evaluaciones y datos sobre los desafíos educativos de su hijo. A partir de esa información se crean las metas del IEP, que son una forma importante en que el equipo del IEP determina si su hijo está progresando durante el año escolar.

Esta capacitación se enfoca en cómo trabajar como parte del equipo del IEP para desarrollar metas que sean específicas, medibles, alcanzables, orientadas a resultados y con plazos determinados, dentro del marco de la ley federal de educación especial, la Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Tener objetivos SMART en el IEP puede ayudar a su hijo a aprovechar al máximo la educación especial mediante metas realistas que aseguren que reciba el apoyo necesario en la escuela.

También discutiremos errores comunes que se deben evitar, como:
• Establecer metas demasiado bajas o demasiado altas
• Basar las metas en datos insuficientes
• No comprender completamente cómo la discapacidad está afectando el acceso de un niño a la educación

Who Should Attend
Parents, caregivers, and family members of children and youth who receive special education services or have an IFSP, IEP, or Section 504 Plan.

Materials to Have Available:
3-ring binder
Tab dividers
Pen
Highlighter
Pencil pouch (optional)
Your child’s most recent IFSP, IEP, or Section 504 Plan
Recent evaluations or assessments
A copy of your Procedural Safeguards
Any additional educational records you would like to organize
A current photo of your child (optional, for the binder cover)
Come ready to organize your records, learn practical strategies, and leave with an IEP binder that will help you stay organized and advocate effectively for your child.
