Melvin is 9 years old.

He’s been at the shelter for only 9 days — and the notes staff have written about this little senior boy are almost entirely positive.

Melvin approaches his handler to say hello with a loose body and wagging tail.

He’s easy to leash.
He walks well on leash.

He approaches other handlers looking for treats and affection, again with a loose body and wagging tail. ❤️

And when he sees other dogs through the barrier?

He greets them appropriately with that same loose body and wagging tail.

Then he’s easy to bring right back to his kennel.

Melvin sounds like a little guy who simply wants to be around people.

But now he’s sick.

Yesterday, Melvin was examined for sneezing. He sneezed during the exam and had mild mucoid nasal discharge. Staff have requested CDV PCR testing and are beginning treatment for suspected CIRD.

At approximately 15 lbs and 9 years old, this little senior should be recovering somewhere comfortable.

Instead, today is his deadline.

Cinnimon is only 12 days into his shelter stay, and now this little guy is sick, resting, coughing — and not eating.

His evaluation shows a dog who genuinely enjoys people.

Staff noted that Cinnimon continued to be social with his handlers. ❤️

Other dogs make him nervous, but when given the opportunity to interact with one, Cinnimon greeted appropriately and then made his own choice:

He walked away.

He ignored the other dog and moved to the opposite side of the yard. His wide eyes and tense body made it clear he was uncomfortable, but instead of escalating the interaction, he created distance.

He was then easily returned to his kennel.

Now Cinnimon’s medical condition is adding another layer of urgency.

On September 30, he was placed on the vet exam list for a hacking cough and not eating.

He coughed during his exam and, although he showed interest in canned food, he did not eat it.

Staff requested CDV PCR testing and began treatment for presumptive infectious tracheobronchitis, including injectable medication and supportive care.

This little guy is overwhelmed, sick and running out of time.

He was interested enough to look at canned food, but he still couldn’t bring himself to eat.

For a little dog already dealing with the stress of the shelter, illness only makes this situation harder.

Cinnimon doesn’t need to be pushed into interactions that frighten him.

Tiago is scared.

For 14 days, this 3-year-old boy has been trying to cope with the shelter — and his evaluation describes a dog who remains nervous around handlers and uncertain around other dogs.

When staff walked Tiago outside, his body was tense.

He was introduced to another dog and initially sniffed him through the barrier. Once they were together in the yard, Tiago remained tense with wide eyes and a low tail.

When the other dog was redirected toward him, Tiago didn’t escalate.

He moved away.

He went to the fence line and avoided the other dog.

And despite how overwhelmed he was, staff were able to easily return him to his kennel.

Now Tiago is dealing with something else, too.

Yesterday, he was examined for a hacking cough and nasal discharge. Staff described him as a “sweet boy” ❤️‍🩹 and noted moderate mucopurulent nasal discharge and coughing during the exam.

Helga is only 4 months old.

She’s spent 15 days in the shelter, she’s currently sick, and underneath everything in her notes is a puppy who seems desperately unsure of what’s happening around her.

When staff first approached, Helga retreated into the corner with her kennelmates.

She allowed affection, but when she was initially picked up, she became frightened enough to bite the handler — with no break in the skin. She was immediately placed back down.

And what happened next matters.
Staff gave her some time.

After Helga interacted with her kennelmates, the handler approached her again, offered affection and slowly tried picking her up a second time.

This time, Helga allowed it easily.

Then this scared little puppy leaned into the handler’s chest, seemingly looking for comfort. ❤️‍🩹

She didn’t need to be written off after one frightened reaction.

She needed someone to slow down.

And when they did, Helga showed them she could adjust.

She shouldn’t be expected to understand how to navigate a loud shelter, unfamiliar hands and being picked up by people she doesn’t know.

Her first reaction told staff she was scared.

Her second reaction showed what can happen when someone listens to that fear.

They slowed down.
They tried again.

And instead of biting, Helga allowed herself to be picked up and leaned into that person’s chest for comfort.

That little detail says so much.

This is a puppy who needs patience, gentle handling and the opportunity to learn that people can be safe.

And now she’s dealing with respiratory illness on top of the stress she’s already experiencing.

She needs somewhere she can decompress and continue receiving the medical care she needs.

But she only has until tomorrow.

When staff first approached Benson, he was trembling.

His eyes were wide and his tail was held low — a scared 2-year-old trying to figure out what was happening around him.

Then the kennel door opened.
And Benson came forward.

His tail started wagging, even though his body was still trembling. ❤️‍🩹

He allowed himself to be leashed easily and walked outside with his handler.

Once he reached the grass, Benson urinated and defecated — leading staff to note that he appears to possibly be potty trained.

And when other dogs passed him?

Benson greeted them with a loose body and wagging tail.

He was easy to bring back to his kennel.

Unfortunately, Benson is now sick too.

He was placed on the veterinary exam list after coughing, green nasal discharge and vomiting were reported. During his exam, staff described him as calm. He was coughing, although his nares were clear, and no vomiting was observed during the exam.

A CDV PCR sample was requested as a precaution, and Benson is beginning treatment for presumptive CIRD.

He’s only had 8 days.
And tomorrow, his time runs out.

He was afraid.

But when someone opened the door and gave him an opportunity to come forward, he did.

He walked outside.

He relaxed enough to use the bathroom in the grass.

He saw other dogs and greeted them with loose, friendly body language.

Nothing in these notes describes a dog who has given up on connecting with the world around him.

They describe a nervous young dog who is still trying.

Now he’s coughing and undergoing treatment while sitting inside the same environment that already had him trembling.

Toni is 8 years old, only 14 pounds, and currently sitting in the shelter with a painful-looking wound on her abdomen.

And despite everything she’s going through, staff describe her as a “nice girl.” ❤️‍🩹

Toni’s behavioral evaluation couldn’t be much sweeter.

She approaches all handlers with a loose body and wagging tail.

She’s easy to leash.
She’s easy to walk outside.

When other handlers pass by, Toni goes over to greet them — again with a loose body and wagging tail.

And when it’s time to go back inside, she’s easy to return to her kennel.

This little girl clearly likes people.
But Toni also needs medical care.

Veterinary staff found an ulcerated wound on her left caudal abdominal mammary gland. The notes list possibilities including a ruptured abscess, neoplasia or another cause — meaning the exact cause isn’t established in the notes provided.

She’s been started on antibiotics and NSAIDs, and staff advised possible mass removal/wound repair.

Toni needs someone who can get her out and make sure that care continues.

Because tomorrow, she runs out of time. 💔

Nate is just a baby.

At only 2 months old and barely 6 pounds, he’s already spent 16 days inside the shelter — and tomorrow, his time runs out.

When staff evaluated Nate, he was nervous.

He retreated into the corner with his kennelmates when someone approached.

But once given the chance, this frightened little puppy allowed affection. ❤️‍🩹

Staff were able to pick him up and carry him, and Nate was easily handled for affection and routine daily care.

He’s not a “bad” puppy.

He’s a tiny baby who doesn’t understand where he is yet.

And now there’s another concern.

One of Nate’s kennelmates was placed on the veterinary exam list for nasal discharge. Nate himself was noted to have mild seropurulent nasal discharge, although his nares were clear and he was not coughing during his exam.

Staff requested CDV PCR testing as a precaution and began doxycycline.

He’s 2 months old.

He should be learning what toys are, falling asleep somewhere safe and discovering the world.

Instead, he has a euthanasia deadline tomorrow. 💔

❤️ WHAT WE KNOW:

• Easily picked up + carried

Nate’s entire world has existed for only about two months.

And 16 of those days have already been spent inside a shelter.

Of course he was nervous.

He’s six pounds, surrounded by unfamiliar sounds, smells, people and dogs, without any understanding of why he’s there.

But even while frightened enough to retreat into a corner, Nate allowed someone to reach him.

He accepted affection.
He allowed himself to be carried.
He let staff care for him.

There’s a whole little puppy waiting underneath that uncertainty — one who hasn’t even had the chance to learn what life outside the shelter can be.

And he shouldn’t run out of time before he gets that chance.

Nate’s deadline is TOMORROW, Thursday, October 1.
