San Antonio Area Pilots,
We have a member selling his share in the Fort Sam Houston Flying Club. Contact us for more information and to connect with him directly.
The Fort Sam Houston Flying Club is a private equity partnership owning a single Cessna 172M. We currently have twelve members who equally share ownership in the club. The minimum requirement is a valid Private Pilots License, due to insurance reasons. We don't allow basic PPL training, but we encourage our members to train for advanced ratings with their own CFIs in our airplane.
The club owns one 1975 Cessna 172M which we hangar at GateOne (the FBO) at Stinson Airport, San Antonio, TX. The plane has approximately 9000 total airframe hours, and in early 2024, has a new engine. We recently have redone most of the interior and in my opinion both the interior and exterior are in good shape. Most members of the club are instrument rated, so we maintain the aircraft to be IFR current, with new avionics in the center stack. Two Garmin G5 Electronic Flight Instrument displays are the primary instruments and a Garmin GTN-650 GPS/COMM/NAV/Mult-Function Display provides the primary navigation and situational awareness with Comm/Nav 1. A KX-155 radio is for Comm/Nav 2, and a GTX-345 transponder with ADSB-In for traffic awareness.
To join the club, you buy a share of the club from a member (price to be negotiated, typically $10,000) and pay a $400 initiation fee. Roughly speaking, we have 12 shares of a $90,000 airplane and substantial cash account for future engine overhaul and/or upgrades. We work to maintain its value to preserve the members' equity. Once you are in the club, we have two annual assessments, one in January and another in July. The assessments pay for hangar fees, aircraft insurance, maintenance, oil, and club operating costs. These assessments have varied over the years. In 2024, our assessments are $1,300 in January and $1,300 in July. These assessments entitle the member to 20 hours of flying time (dry) during the year at no additional charge. If you fly more than 20 hours during the year, then the dry rate is charged at $85/flying hour. You always pay for your own gas. We are currently building up our engine reserve and paying back the cost of the new avionics.
The average age of the current twelve members is about 52, ranging from 30 to 75. Club membership is variable depending on each member's situation. A club membership share may become available at anytime, or not for several months or years.
I believe our club is the most economical way to fly around San Antonio and is great for building hours and experience.
If you want more information, please contact one of the Club Officers (Bill, David or Todd). We will be happy to arrange a time to meet you to show you the airplane.
Sincerely,
Bill Fisher
