Discovery Camps

Discovery Camps An NPO which hosts residential camping experiences for kids and adolescents with cancer in SA, TX πŸ•οΈ

Camp Discovery is a special world for children from across Texas between the ages of 7 and 16. These wonderful children are given a chance to have a fun and β€œnormal” camp experience they would not be able to have at a traditional residential camp. And besides having fun, campers learn new skills, undergo individual growth and see personal development. EXPERIENCE
Speak with any of our long-time vol

unteers and they could tell you wonderful stories about what they had seen at Camp Discovery. For example, children experience perhaps the best week of their lives that is full of swimming, fishing, climbing, canoeing, laughing, dancing, singing, horseback riding, and simply spending time with others who can relate to their situation. STAFF
We currently boast a 94 percent rate of returning volunteers and approximately 74 percent of our volunteers are cancer survivors, with over 50 percent being former campers. Our volunteer staffers are dedicated to providing understanding, leadership, compassion, safety and direction to our campers, as well as enjoying the experience with them. The camp is abundantly staffed with volunteer nurses, nurse practitioners and physicians. Many of these medical professionals provide treatment to our campers on a regular basis away from camp and thoroughly enjoy seeing them outside the hospital environment.

It's only been 4 days since we left Texas Lion's Camp Saturday morning, and we already miss it. The songs, the laughter, the fun echoing across camp β€” Camp Discovery 2026 went by way too fast, and these photos have us counting down to next summer already.

Camp is a family, not a place. πŸ’›

July 16th Update: Rainy morning, high spirits β˜”

We're high and dry, safe and sound, and having a fabulous time on our rainy-day plans here at Camp Discovery. And through it all, our amazing medical team hasn't missed a beat β€” not a single med has been missed. Dr. Maria Falcon-Cantrill along with our medical team are braving the elements to make sure every camper gets their medicines right on time, every time. πŸ’›

A behind-the-scenes look at Camp Discovery 🏰 Medical Director Dr. Maria Falcon-Cantrill takes you across camp β€” from the staff cabins at the low point all the way up the hill, where our campers’ cabins, rec hall, and cafeteria sit high and safe above it all. Elevated ground, cared-for spaces, and happy campers right at home this week. πŸ’›

Everyone at Camp Discovery is safe and accounted for.

The continued rain has brought flooding to the lower regions of Kerrville and surrounding towns, with road closures across the area.

Our location sits very high above the river and continues to provide strong protection for main camp, and all cabins. We have maintained power throughout the rain this week and are fully prepared should conditions change, with backup generators ready.

At this time, travel to the area is not safe. In accordance with our Emergency Action Plan, our campers and staff are safe and secure on high ground, and we will keep everyone in the safest available position as conditions develop. We also have ample food and essential supplies on hand to care for everyone at camp for as long as needed.

Texas Lions Camp, our host site is in regular contact with the Office of Emergency Management, and we are actively monitoring weather as our teams meet and coordinate plans. We will continue to communicate with families throughout the day.

5 days.

In 5 days, the buses roll toward Kerrville and Camp Discovery 2026 begins.

A whole week where kids facing cancer get to just be kids β€” cabins, canoes, campfires, and a couple hundred people who get it.

The countdown is on. πŸ•οΈ

Right now, our ARCH crew is in Florida... and they're not on vacation. β˜€οΈ

They're at Give Kids the World Village, serving meals, bussing tables, running the carousel, and helping wish families have the kind of week they'll never forget.

ARCH takes former campers and flips the whole experience: from "camp is about me" to "camp is for the camper." It's where our future Camp Discovery counselors are made. πŸ’›

These are the kids who grew up facing cancer alongside us β€” now showing up to serve the next family in line.

More to come. πŸ“Έ

πŸ‘‘ The winning design for Camp Discovery 2026 is here β€” and we are obsessed.

Jordynn submitted this incredible dragon-and-castle illustration for our Kingdom of Discovery T-Shirt Design Contest, and the community chose it as the winner. Her artwork will be worn by every camper and volunteer at Camp Discovery this July.

Jordynn, thank you for sharing your creativity with our community. This is exactly the kind of magic that makes camp a family, not a place.

Congratulations! πŸ‰πŸ°
