Today, February 28, we recognize Rare Disease Awareness Day.

As a survivor of PMP (Pseudomyxoma Peritonei)/Appendix Cancer — a rare cancer that affects one in a million persons each year— this day is deeply personal for me.

When you’re diagnosed with something rare, you quickly learn what that word truly means. It means fewer answers. Fewer specialists. Fewer treatment protocols. It means explaining your diagnosis over and over because even in cancer spaces, people haven’t heard of it.

But it also means something powerful.

It means becoming your own advocate.
It means finding strength you didn’t know you had.
It means living with extraordinary gratitude for ordinary days.

PMP changed my life — but it did not define it. It stretched my faith. It deepened my compassion. It sharpened my voice. And it reminded me that rare does not mean alone.

Today I honor every rare disease warrior and every family navigating uncertainty with courage. Your story matters. Your life matters. Your fight matters.

If you are living with a rare diagnosis, please know this: you are seen, you are valued, and you are not invisible.

Rare is not weak.
Rare is resilient.
Rare is powerful.

Pause and ask yourself: What do I need today?

🫶 Patients: Your needs may change—and that’s okay.
🫶 Caregivers: You are allowed to need support, too.
🏃🏽‍♂️ Participants: Some days are for pushing, others for protecting.

Listening is an act of self-care.

🎗️Self-Care Saturday

Movement doesn’t have to be intense to be meaningful.

🫶 Patients: Gentle movement can look like stretching or breathing.
🫶 Caregivers: A short walk can be a reset.
🏃🏽‍♀️ Runners/Walkers: Move with intention, not pressure.

Your body is not behind—it’s communicating.

Why we Run/Walk

We are grateful for the community we have built. Your support is humbling and we appreciate you.

It is not meant for us to walk this life journey alone. 🛣️

Listen to Harold’s story on how he found community with PMP Pals as he supported Sheri during this unexpected life journey.

Thank you Mr. Harold for sharing your story.

We hope this encourages you to create or find the community that you need. 🧸🎗️
