ividuals and homeowners; headquartered in San Antonio, Texas. His foundation was established from numerous activities in the struggle to ensure civil rights, social and economic justice. His training and guidance were inspired by the tactics and strategic practices from his friend, the late Mr. Shel Trapp, National
People’s Action, National Training Institute Chicago, Illinois. Trapp’s publications have been used by thousands of community-based organizations, churches, social service and labor groups, political parties, schools and individuals to improve their “Quality of Life” in neighborhoods around the world. This manual highlights tactics and strategies from several of his chapters in the following: “You Can’t Build a Machine without Nuts and Bolts” and “Dynamics of Organizing, In a Series on Organizing and Neighborhood
Preservation” published by National Training and Information Center of Chicago, Illinois. Calvert established the Neighborhoods First Alliance in 1972 as a non-profit community-based organization to provide a structure for organizing and developing leaders to fight numerous issue that were impacting the area, to include his son Tommy Calvert, Jr., who now serves as the youngest and first African American elected as Bexar County Commissioner. NFA is a multi-issue organization has been successful in addressing criminal, drug and gang activity, flooding, infrastructure, housing, jobs, health care, educational, environmental, housing, communication, economic development, urban radio, predatory lending, seniors, food and nutrition issues,
minority business contracting, and community reinvestment. The NFA has impacted millions of families throughout the community and the nation. Neighborhoods First Alliance seasoned leaders are now average 85 to 95 years of age. NFA has been working to develop new leadership in build capacity and continue to keep our
neighborhoods safe. Police departments can’t combat crime alone and need help with skilled organizers on the ground in our Neighborhoods. We hope you will become one of the few that will make a difference!
