As many of you may know, I am the founder of HUTA-Harambee Urban Tenants Alliance. This is the underbelly of what takes place everyday to tenants across the nation, but definitely here in The Greater San Antonio Area. Texas is a Red State. It is also a "Landlord" State. As a result of that there is no real Tenant Advocacy at the Community, City or State Level. That does not mean Tenants have no rights. It simply means that if YOU don't know your rights they are null and void. It is imperative that you not only "Know Your Rights" but you must also " Know Your Lease" BEFORE You sign it. At present there is a moratorium going on to prevent evictions during a national health crisis. That does not mean you should coast along. Eventually it will come due if you have not paid it. In the meantime, you should not be harrassed. If you know of someone who is going through this it is deemed 'harrassment' and thanks to M. L. King, there is The Fair Housing Act that makes this illegal. Here is some much-needed information. Take the time to read the information. Know your Landlord, Know Your Lease, and most of all...KNOW YOUR RIGHTS!! This system is sophisticated and banks on you not reading, not caring and most of all,, NOT STANDING UP...INDIVIDUALLY OR COLLECTIVELY!
