#2 🌳 Abandoned or Found Outside
Guinea pigs found abandoned outdoors, left behind in homes/apartments after people move out.

💔 Unfortunately, guinea pigs are not immune to the problem of animal abandonment we see in our community. We are contacted about guinea pigs found outdoors far too often.

We don't know how many guinea pigs are dumped and never found. We only know about the ones someone happens to discover and report. 💔🐹

🌡️ HEAT & WEATHER
Guinea pigs are extremely sensitive to heat and can quickly become dangerously overheated. Did you know Guinea Pigs can’t sweat? They can easily succumb to heatstroke in high temps--never leave Guinea Pigs in a vehicle, garage, or outside in temps above 80 degrees. They are also vulnerable to cold, rain, and other severe weather.
🦅 PREDATORS
Cats, dogs, hawks, owls, snakes, and other predators can pose a serious threat. Guinea pigs have very few ways to protect themselves.
🥬 FOOD & WATER
They depend on people for proper food and fresh water. They cannot simply survive by eating whatever they find outside. Going without food or water for even 6 hours can cause GI statis, often times a fatal condition.
🦠 ILLNESS & INJURY
Without proper care, they can become sick, injured, or suffer from parasites and other health problems. Infections can spread quickly from cuts or bites.
💔 AND THE HARDEST PART…
We can only imagine how many guinea pigs are abandoned somewhere and die before anyone finds them.
Guinea pigs are domesticated pets. They should never be left outside to fend for themselves, or left in an empty apartment in hopes that someone will find them in time. If you can no longer care for one, please contact a rescue, shelter, or experienced guinea pig owner for help. 🐹❤️

Back to Basics: if you are buying grids for a C&C cage, MAKE SURE they are 14 inch square grids! I just spent 30 minutes placing an order as almost every type of Cube grids are only 12 inches on Amazon. I stick with Whitmorr storage Cube grids for that reason! Also you can buy coroplast trays on Amazon instead of making one yourself- again, watch for the CORRECT size for your grid Framework. If you decide to use 12 inch grids , make sure you do not have babies ( holes are bigger so they can get their heads stuck) and will have to adjust to at least a 2 1/2 grid by 5 to 6 grid length to get the right size for two piggies.. 🐹 WHERE DO OUR GUINEA PIGS COME FROM?
#1 — FROM OWNERS - What are some top reasons we see for surrendering?

🛒 IMPULSIVE PURCHASE/BOUGHT FOR KIDS
Pet stores often advertise guinea pigs as easy "Starter Pets.” They’re not!
Guinea pigs require spacious housing, unlimited hay, fresh vegetables and water, daily cleaning, and knowledgeable adult care and attention.
Kids also tend to lose interest once the initial excitement wears off. Guinea pigs should be adopted with the commitment to care for them for life—5-8+ years.🐹❤️

🐹 WE GOT A SECOND ONE and THEN...
Many people don't realize guinea pigs should have a companion. They later get a second guinea pig, only to discover they aren't compatible—or the guinea pigs were misgendered and suddenly there are babies!

🌿 ALLERGIES
This happens quite often. Sometimes the allergy is actually to Timothy hay, not the guinea pig. We suggest trying Orchard Grass hay. If that doesn't help, the person may truly be allergic to the piggies.

🏠 I'M MOVING
We get many requests from people who are moving that say their new home doesn't allow pets. Pet policies are something to consider before bringing any pet home—and while searching for your next home.

Our piggies come to us from many different situations:

🏠 FROM THEIR OWNERS
People who purchased guinea pigs from pet stores,, friends, or family.

🌳 ABANDONED OR FOUND OUTSIDE
Guinea pigs found abandoned outdoors, left behind in homes/apartments after people move out.

🐹 RESCUE SITUATIONS
Overbreeding, accidental litters, pregnancy due to misgendered guinea pigs, and situations where someone has more guinea pigs than they can now care for.

🏡 LOCAL SHELTERS
Sometimes shelters take in guinea pigs as part of larger animal or domestic abuse cases and they contact us for help.

NO MATTER WHERE THEY COME FROM, OUR GOAL IS THE SAME: RESCUE, REHAB, REHOME. 🐹💕

Pair of the Day: Heimer & Flutternutter.
These two boys are so sweet and ready for a new home together! Heimer (1 yr) came to us August of 2025 with another piggie, in bad shape, were emaciated and actually almost died. Flutternutter was born at the rescue in Sept 2024 and adopted out as a cagemate to a lonely piggie , who passed last year.
Both boys were lonely so we tried them together and they are best buds now! Come check them out this coming Sunday Meet & Greet at Bandera Petsmart.

Leftovers from our sale !! The two tables are discounted to $25- the white one can be taken apart to transport easily. We have some potted annual plants . We STILL have 12 inch cage grids- come and just take them! Bedding is FREE and we have board games also for FREE! Need to clean out this week. After that , everything will be donated or thrown out.

Great day at the Meet n greet. W***Y WONKA found a forever home! SHERLOCK & WATSON will be going home with a family this week! PATITA, who was in a foster to match, joined her new family permanently with adoption .
Welcome Haley, to our foster family with picking up Bolita & Lo**ta as fosters today. If you have experience with guinea pigs, we are looking for you to join our foster team !
Thanks to ISSAC, who is a college student with 5 owned piggies, that volunteers and helps us talk to families about piggies- we love your passion for piggies!
