"You went into it for the child. And you ended up with the caseworker, the mom, the dad, the grandparents, the aunts and uncles that came attached to this child."

Jennifer tells this story about the moment she met the mother of the first little girl she fostered.

But by the end, something shifted. W opened up. Josh spoke into his life. And the night closed with Josh praying over him.

This is what Don't Go Alone is about. Not fixing anyone. Just showing up, and staying.

There's a sense of loss. There's a sense of guilt. But there are no regrets.

Josh and his wife were supposed to be in a different season. Empty nesters. Rediscovering their marriage. Finally catching a break after decades in ministry.

Instead, a late night phone call changed everything, and they became a kinship family raising their grandson.

Josh doesn't pretend the loss isn't real. He doesn't pretend the guilt isn't there either. He just keeps showing up anyway.

This is what kinship care actually looks like. Not a clean story. A long, honest one.

San Antonio has the largest gap between rich and poor of any city in the U.S.

Drive 15 minutes one way and you're in one of the nicest parts of Texas. Drive 15 minutes the other and you won't recognize where you are.

Kids are caught in between. Some have slept in caseworkers' offices. Some have spent nights in hotel rooms with a social worker staying beside them. Some have been put on a bus alone, because there was no family to go to.

But God is moving in our city. Churches are stepping up, and showing up, for kids like these.

"God loves my kids, my nephew, my sister more than I ever could. It's okay to let go and let him love them."

That wasn't an easy lesson for Melody to learn. There were times letting go felt like it would cause damage. It turned out to be the thing that allowed someone else to take their own steps forward.

Y sat down with the Flores family for a match meeting through Don't Go Alone.

They welcomed her in and added Korean touches to the meal just to honor her. They talked for hours. They invited her into every family event and trip on their calendar, including a 4th of July celebration.

They didn't know her whole story yet. They just knew she was for them.

Because young adults don't age out of needing people.

Melody was 14 when her mom asked what she'd think about bringing a baby sister into their home through foster care and adoption.

She thought it sounded fun. A living doll, she called it. She had no idea how much life was about to change.

That's how it starts for a lot of families. Not with a plan. With one question, answered before anyone fully understood what it would cost.

"I couldn't keep walking through life knowing there were kids out there who needed a safe space, and not be part of it."

That's been Melody's story for over 30 years. A stepsister. A baby sister with medical needs nobody else would take on. A nephew pulled from a home that wasn't safe. Every time, the same conviction showed up.

You don't have to wait for the perfect moment to be part of the answer. You just have to stop looking away.
