Kidney Statistics

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is often called the silent killer because the symptoms are easily explained away as being from another cause. Left undiagnosed and untreated, kidneys may stop functioning all together and result in End Stage Renal Desease (ESRD). ESRD is irreversible and can easily be treated with dialysis or transplant.

More than 5,000 individuals in the San Antonio area currently receive regular dialysis treatment as a result of ESRD.

9.1% of all Texas ESRD patients live in and around Bexar County.

63,000+ Texans are receiving renal replacement therapy to stay alive.

The ESRD NETWORK reports the rate of prevalence for CKD in South Texas is 3.8 times higher than the national average.

In the United States, diabetes and hypertension are the leading causes of ESRD, accounting for 72% of new cases.

Each day 50 gallons of blood are filtered through 140 miles of tubes and million of filters within the kidneys.

The body's total blood supply circulates through the kidneys about 12 times.

Kidneys filter about 200 quarts of blood a day.

Kidneys receive 20-25% of all the blood pumped by the heart.

SPURS COYOTE actively promoting health by checking his blood pressure at the Texas Kidney Check Screening event Nov.4th.
High blood pressure is the second leading cause of chronic kidney disease. Like high blood glucose , high blood pressure can also damage the filters in your kidneys. Almost 1 in 5 adults with high blood pressure has CKD. (NIH)
