As the Bexar County Gun Safety Coalition Chair, I applaud the efforts of County Judge Peter Sakai, to facilitate a meeting between San Antonio Police Chief McManus and Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales, along with Mayor Ron Nirenberg, Sheriff Javier Salazar and District Judge Ron Rangel, who helps oversee administrative matters in the Bexar County courts. It is essential we have dialogue to resolve these critical issues and stop the gun violence. We must protect our law enforcement and find the right balance to protect the defendants' rights, they are innocent until proven guilty. That being said, if there is a repeat violent offender, we must do our best to keep them from doing another crime by keeping them off the streets, if possible. This is done with our law enforcement working closely with our magistrate judges, district judges, the DA and vice versa.
What we also need to do is have stronger common-sense gun safety laws at the State and Federal level. We must have community discussions to get our State and Federal Legislators to only keep guns in the hands of law abiding citizens. The Bexar County Gun Safety Coalition will have future community summits, other public meetings and advocacy events, to get our legislators to protect the rights of people to live their lives without being threatened to be killed attending school, church, movie theaters, shopping at stores, attending concerts and other activities.
