Janet Namme Educational Foundation

Janet Namme Educational Foundation A country like Nigeria is extremely blessed with countless natural resources and a population that can provide the manpower to lift itself out of poverty.

The Janet Namme Educational Foundation (JNEF) is a non-profit organisation established to prepare Nigerian students to excel at their school work through continuous self-assessment & peer testing. However, that promise of success, one intuitively believed in by our grandparents and their parents, has remained un-achieved decades after independence. One key reason for this is the tumbling level of

local education. Investment in education has woefully been but a sliver of the National budget for decades, leaving institutions underfunded. The result is that Nigerian schools have churned out graduates unprepared to enter the work economy. That shortage in skilled workers has proven a detriment time and again. Yet, the cycle continues. To counter this unfortunate reality, the Janet Namme Educational Fund aims to establish the framework by which Nigeria produces globally competitive children poised to set the world ablaze. A duly registered non profit organization in Texas, USA, the Fund was created in honor of the late Mrs. Janet Ara Oben Namme. She was one of Nigeria’s most respected educators who believed in the power of education as a means to personal and national achievement. As a teacher and Principal at some of Nigeria’s key primary and secondary institutions, Mrs. Namme was instrumental in transforming students into high performers in English and Mathematics. Even after retiring from the employ of the Ministry of Education, she took it upon herself to create a private company, Edukonsult, that tested students across Nigeria’s sprawling economic and commercial capital, Lagos State. She thereby created a metric by which parents and schools could gauge the performance of their students from year to year beyond mere school based exams at the end of term. Following that example, the Janet Namme Educational Fund will continue Mrs. Namme’s legacy of preparing Nigerian students to excel at their school work. In conjunction with a global leader in Child, College and Professional assessment and learning solutions, the Fund will provide the Assess Program. This program will be a series of universal tests, provided for free to students, to check how well they have learned and retained information each year. The test results will enable parents and schools to track the progress of their children in English, Mathematics and other subjects. By providing the Assess Program at no cost, the Fund achieves a key goal of preparing Nigerian students for the types of standardized tests that are used the world over. And as a result, these children will get one step closer to becoming well educated, globally competitive members of society. A further benefit of the program’s approach is that our children will be able to seamlessly fit into any educational system that they eventually end up in. Be it an institution of higher learning in Nigeria, another African country, in Europe or in North America. Plus, in a short period of time, the results of the Funds programs will serve as a guide, to parents, on which schools provide the best returns on quality education.

In the heart of Lemo Village, within the Wasimi community of Ogun State, a group of dedicated primary school students and their teachers is on a mission to improve their Math and English skills. With bright smiles and unwavering enthusiasm, these young learners come together after school, eager to face challenges head-on.

📚✨ Each session is filled with laughter, teamwork, and a shared commitment to success. They recognize that education is a powerful tool for their future, and they are not just dreaming—they are actively working towards their goals!

However, it's important to acknowledge the challenges that come with this commitment. The journey for both teachers and students can be difficult, especially during heavy rains when the roads become impassable. We celebrate their dedication and resilience in overcoming these obstacles. I encourage my friends to appreciate the effort it takes for children in some parts of West Africa to attend school.

The Janet Namme Educational Foundation (JNEF) is dedicated to building a strong foundation for the next generation of leaders by equipping them with essential Math and English skills.

We're excited to share the latest developments regarding the after school tutorial program in Elekuro Village, inspired by the progress made at the Janet Namme Educational Foundation in the Wasimi communities of Elekuro and Lemo villages.

On October 11th, 2024, our weekly rural after school tutorial program welcomed 11 enthusiastic students, and refreshments were provided to keep their spirits high. With the new school session underway, private schools in the area have also successfully implemented their own tutorial programs, further enhancing the educational experience of students enrolled in their school.

We're proud to see such positive engagement and growth within the community as we plant the seeds for tomorrow’s leaders one community at a time.

April 25th - The kids resumed tutorial classes at Lemo village, Wasimi community, Ogun State, after the Easter break.
Their teachers remain committed to our vision of training the next generation. Last year’s award ceremony saw the best Math and English student from 2 rural communities visiting the big city of Lagos and tour a part of the city. Photos were taken, certificates awarded, scholarships were given. Motivating all the rest of the kids to study hard and look forward to something.

October Update: Lemo Village - Oct 12th, 2021.
When we started the Rural Education After School initiative, in the Wasimi Community in Ogun State last year, little did we know that being consistent with tutoring these kids will start bearing fruit within just 1 year. The kids at Lemo village lagged behind their peers at Elekuro village, but recent assessment tests revealed that the gap is closing up really fast. Same dedicated tutors, doing the rounds to the neighboring village, yet phenomenal positive results. We are looking forward to the year end awards ceremony. Appreciation goes out to the Missionary family of teachers who have partnered with JNEF to improve educational standards in the communities they serve.

July 14th, 2021 - Rural Education Pre-Assement Tests: As we progress into our 2nd full year of JNEF’s rural education program, we concluded a fresh set of pre-assessment tests to baseline kids that were promoted to a new class grade during the previous year and new kids at the village who joined the program mid year. These tests were conducted at Lemo village, Wasimi community and the kids all showed despite the heavy rains. Last year we saw great improvement (up to 50% improvement) in the post assessment tests across the board in English and Math Skills in Lemo village, so we are excited at what this 2nd year will bring, as we nurture leaders for the next generation.

May 29th, 2021. Celebrating One full year of the Rural Education “After School” tutorial initiative in Lemo and Elekuro Villages - Ogun State, Nigeria.

On the directive of the JNEF Board, new assessment tests were introduced to see how the kids at Lemo and Elekuro villages were improving on their scores, aptitude. New tests will be administered in June 2021.

The teachers have also been instructed to introduce the older kids into analytical thinking, by creating “what would you do scenarios” so the children become accustomed to skills needed to solve real world problems. This also gets children to start expressing their creativity at an early age.

March 1st - 5th, this week our family remembers the lives of the foundation’s visionaries, our late parents. Mrs Janet Namme (March 1st 2016) and Chief Laban Omowale Namme (March 5th, 2018). Both were big on education and spent their lives educating students (in Education) or the public (through the Media).

Mrs. Janet Namme, who departed on March 1st 2016, and whose career, passion and life example as a mother, grand mother and family matriarch, touched many at the various Unity colleges in Nigeria, including being Teacher, Vice Principal at the Director at the Ministry of Education, till her retirement. (Kings College (1969-1973), Queens College (Mid 70s as VIce Principal), FGGC Kazaure - Principal, late 70s) FGGC Benin (Principal early 80s), Queens College (Principal mid 80s). http://www.tributes.com/obituary/read/Janet-Ara-Namme-103385672

The recent pandemic revealed new areas of deficiencies not only in our public health systems, but also in rural education for the younger generation.
The Janet Namme Educational Foundation (JNEF), piloted its rural awareness and educational initiative which started with palliatives for COVID-19, but quickly transitioned to the kick off of a rural tutorial “after school” program, which during the pandemic months after the lockdown, became a the main learning option for the village kids in the Lemo and Elekuro villages, which are part of the Wasimi Community in Ogun State.
Pre-assessment tests were conducted and a Post Assessment test was done in the last week of November 2020 to assess the effectiveness of the English and Math tutorials. At the 2020 Annual end of year academic excellence awards event, the results of these tests revealed significant improvements in English and Math skills of kids in the 2 villages where the program piloted.
