It's Hunter Education Week at TWA Headquarters in New Braunfels!

This is a great chance to certify a young hunter before hunting season kicks off this fall. If you’re in Central Texas and looking to check Hunter Ed off your list (or just need a productive way to fill up a day of summer vacation), we’ve got you covered!

We're hosting sessions through June 13 and spots are still available. Don’t forget, every Texas Youth Hunting Program -TYHP hunter must complete Hunter Ed before heading out on their hunt, so this is an opportunity to get it all done in one place!

While three additional confirmed cases of New World screwworm were confirmed in Texas today—La Salle & Gillespie counties plus a dog from New Mexico treated in Andrews County--it is important to remember that the U.S. food supply remains safe. According to the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, screwworms do not infest meat, fruits, vegetables or other food sources.

Prompt reporting of animals suspected of NWS infestation is key. Live animals with maggots should be reported immediately. Contact a Texas Parks and Wildlife county biologist for wildlife (https://bit.ly/NWS_Wildlife) and report livestock cases by calling Texas Animal Health Commission at 800-550-8242. Potential pet cases should be reported to a veterinarian.

From umbilical lesions to tick bites, New World screwworm (NWS) infestations can start from many kinds of wounds. Laying eyes on your animals is the key to protecting them from this pest. If you observe these signs in your animals:
1. Do NOT move the animal (even to the vet clinic)
2. Report to the TAHC 1-800-550-8242
3. Don't panic. This is a highly preventable and treatable condition.

Stay updated on NWS here: https://www.tahc.texas.gov/emergency/nws.html

Fish Free Saturday!

On the first Saturday in June each year (it's this Saturday, June 6), everyone can fish Texas public waters recreationally without licenses or endorsements. This opportunity exists so that more people can try fishing for the first time. Please consider inviting a friend or family member to join you!

Anglers can also enjoy free fishing all year at more than 70 Texas state parks (park entry fees still apply). All other fishing regulations, such as length and bag limits, remain in effect. A fishing license and endorsement are not required if fishing on state park property or in waters completely enclosed by a state park. On man-made structures (docks, piers, jetties, etc.) within state parks, fishing is allowed by pole-and-line only, and each person is limited to two poles. Please check with the park before participating in any fishing activity and to confirm any additional regulations.

With recent rains across much of Texas, an influx of wildflowers has been a boon to pollinators of all shapes and sizes. It's timely that this month's Wild at Work webinar features USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service Partner Biologist Katie Harris who will share management strategies for pollinator conservation. Tune in on June 24 at noon, but be sure to pre-register for the free webinar at https://www.texas-wildlife.org/waw/.
