Important Update: Texas Hunting & Fishing License Requirements

Starting Aug. 3, updated identity verification rules take effect for most Texas hunting and fishing license purchases to combat residency fraud and to support TPWD law enforcement. While current licenses remain active, 2026/27 licenses that go on sale Aug. 15 will be subject to these new identification guidelines.

If you are a Texas resident, please note the following requirements:

--Primary Identification: You must present an unexpired Texas Driver's License or Texas State Personal ID Card. Both REAL ID and non-REAL ID cards are accepted, provided they are not marked "temporary" or "Limited Term".

--Temporary / Limited Term ID: If your Texas ID is marked "temporary" or "Limited Term", you will need to provide, in person, one of the following, in addition to your ID: Original birth certificate, original birth certificate abroad, unexpired Texas Handgun License, unexpired US Passport or passport card, or unexpired US Military ID. Online transactions are unavailable.

--In-Person Purchase (Physical Presence): If you are buying your license at a local retail agent or TPWD, everyone ages 17 and older must be physically present and show valid proof of identification (Texas Driver's License or Texas State Personal ID Card). Temporary or limited-term IDs are not accepted without additional documentation noted above.

For complete package options, bag limits, and additional details, please review the TPWD License Purchase Requirements & FAQs prior to purchasing your license: https://tpwd.texas.gov/regulations/outdoor-annual/licenses/license-id-validation-faq

Gene Cooper was recently awarded the 2026 TWA Staff Achievement Award, presented by CEO Justin Dreibelbis, at WildLife 2026 in San Antonio.

As Texas Wildlife Association - Conservation Legacy Conservation Education Specialist, Gene leads our North Texas Expeditions program and a team of four highly productive educators with a servant's heart. He has a remarkable gift for bringing out the best in people, whether it's a coworker, volunteer, teacher or student. He leads by example, celebrates others' successes, and makes everyone believe they're capable of more than they thought.

And the results speak for themselves. Under Gene's leadership this year, he and his team reached more than 32,000 students, worked with hundreds of teachers, inspired nearly 10,000 people at public events, and introduced more than 1,200 students to the outdoors through field trips on private, working ranches.

If you know Gene, you know he's one of a kind. Whether he's talking about Texas history, fossils, cicadas or even worm composting, his enthusiasm is contagious. His dedication to the mission reminds us why TWA's work matters.

Today, Texas Wildlife Association issued this statement following Wednesday's Texas Senate Committee on Business and Commerce hearing and statements made today by Committee Chairman Charles Schwertner and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick:

The TWA is grateful to Lt. Governor Patrick, Senator Schwertner and other lawmakers for hearing the voices of rural Texans and taking unprecedented action to call on the Public Utilities Commission to halt consideration of 765-kV transmission line applications until public confidence in routing determination processes can be restored. Texas landowners are foundational to what Texas is today and must be a partner in the planning and development of any large infrastructure buildout.
