We provide data that is understandable, trustworthy, neutral, and timely. Our vision is improved lives and decreased disparities through democratized data. Formerly called the Alamo Area Community Information System (AACIS), CI:Now became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2017. CI:Now’s core staffing is by partnership and contract with the UTHealth Houston School of Public Health in San Antonio, our physic

al and institutional home since 2008. In 2010 CI:Now became the 35th local partner in the National Neighborhood Indicators Partnership (NNIP, neighborhoodindicators.org). NNIP is a learning network, coordinated by the Urban Institute, of independent organizations in 30 cities that share a mission to ensure all communities have access to data and the skills to use information to advance equity and well-being across neighborhoods.

🥵 Did you know some people in our community are living without any air conditioning in their homes? We’re thinking about them this week as temps in Bexar County are forecasted to hit 100+ degrees for multiple days in a row. ☀️

With air conditioning data from the census, we mapped the percentage of occupied housing units without A/C by census tract across all counties covered in our 2025 community health needs assessments (CHNAs): Bexar, Atascosa, Blanco, Comal, Guadalupe, Gillespie, Kendall, Llano, and Mason Counties.

Huge thanks to Kyle Walker, data scientist, researcher and creator of open-source software codes which allowed us to compile this data on our region!

Living without A/C may seem unthinkable to most of us in south Texas, but in just one census tract on San Antonio’s Southside, we were able to identify that 2.5% of homes, or about 46 households, are trying to survive the Texas summer heat without A/C.

☀️ It might be summer, but class is still in session! ✏️

Our training specialist, Jeanette Parra, was a guest speaker for a group of summer student interns at UT San Antonio’s College of AI, Cyber and Computing.

The annual H-E-B Community Innovation Scholars Program provides students the opportunity to work closely with and support local nonprofits.

CINow has participated since the program began three summers ago, introducing students to Bexar Data Dive, and helping them frame their projects with an understanding of our city through a deeper, data-driven lens.

Bexar Data Dive is an in-depth treasure trove of local data collected, organized and available for free in an accessible, user-friendly format.

📣 CINow and partners released research last month on preserving heirs’ property in Bexar County.

🤝 CINow partnered with Asset Funders Network of San Antonio, LISC San Antonio, and Mexican American Unity Council (MAUC) MAUC to conduct focus groups with affected homeowners and compile the data into a plan for preserving heirs’ property.

🗓️ On May 7, Laura McKieran, executive director of CINow, presented some of the research and recommendations included in the brief. The brief includes short-term (2026) and long-term (2027 and onward) recommendations, with opportunities for philanthropy and specific implementing timelines for each.

📊 Key Findings:
Bexar County has an estimated 12,000 heirs’ properties, about 2.1% of all residential properties examined. 92% are single-family homes.

🏠 Heirs’ properties were 2 to 5 times more likely to be delinquent on 2024 property taxes than other properties.

Single-family homes were 5 times more likely to be delinquent.

📍Homes on the near-West Side and areas southeast of I-35 are at higher risk of becoming heirs’ properties with tangled titles, when relevant risk factors are considered.

📈 Investor activity is making heirs’ properties harder to identify and more vulnerable to acquisition.

📣 The 2025 Community Health Needs Assessments are here!

🏘️💬 Community voices, data, and an equity-driven process: Every three years, CINow partners with the Bexar County Health Collaborative, local hospitals, community organizations, and residents to listen, learn, and identify our region’s most pressing health needs.

📑✏️🏠Why it matters: These assessments are tools for collective action — across healthcare, public health, housing, education, philanthropy, and more.

📊 ☝️Five assessments, nine counties, one region
Recognizing that health doesn’t stop at county lines, the 2025 CHNAs mark a regional milestone, with assessments released concurrently for Bexar, Atascosa, Comal, Guadalupe, and surrounding Texas Hill Country counties.

🔎 🧠❤️‍🩹 What we found - mental health needs:
A large proportion of our community is suffering mentally and emotionally. Concern about mental health was a steady drumbeat in survey responses, focus group discussions, and key informant interviews.

🍎🥖🛒🏠Basic needs unmet:
Food insecurity and housing instability cropped up again and again in conversations with community members. These are all non-negotiable foundations of health and well-being.

😷📈 Lasting harm caused by pandemic:
Our community continues to suffer from the social, economic, and health damage caused directly and indirectly by the COVID-19 pandemic. Some public health problems are markedly worse than before the pandemic.

📊🤓Can’t get enough health data? Stay tuned for a detailed county breakdown of the health needs we found.
