Why does France slow down in August? 🇫🇷

If you’ve ever visited France in August, you’ve probably noticed: shops close, cafés take a break, and millions of people head off on vacation.

The story goes back to 1936, when France’s Popular Front government introduced les congés payés: two weeks of paid vacation for workers. Until then, a summer holiday was largely a privilege of the wealthy.

The reform changed that. For the first time, millions of working-class families could travel, see the sea, visit family, or simply take time off together.

2026 marks 90 years of paid vacation in France. And the tradition of slowing down in August is still very much alive.

So if France seems a little quieter this month, now you know why. 🇫🇷
