Tomorrow is September 1st.
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. As many of you know, this hits really close to home for us. We've made a lot of new friends over the last year, which I guess is the coolest part of starting a new business, so I figured I'd share a little bit of our "Why".
Our oldest son, William, was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma July 2018, 4 days after we moved to New Braunfels, TX. The super short version of the story is that he fought like hell, always with a smile on his face while enduring hundreds of days in the hospital, countless rounds of chemo, some radiation, amputation of his leg, learning to walk and run on a prosthesis, and having a couple surgeries to remove tumors in his lungs & drain fluid. He fought for almost 2 years and passed away May 3, 2020 at just 11 years old.
In passed years, I've spent the month posting all of the statistics of childhood cancer. They all suck. Treatment options or lack thereof are beyond outdated and barbaric. Those statistics are now outdated since I think it's now closer to 1 in 280 kids are diagnosed with cancer. Every 3 minutes (just 5 years ago it was every 4 minutes...), somewhere in the world a family hears the devastating words that their child has been diagnosed with cancer.
One statistic that hasn't changed is that cancer is the #1 cause of death by disease in kids in America.
This year I'm going to do something different. I'm going to tell you all of the ways we are going to help, in hopes that you'll join in on at least one of them.
Will was a helper. And he was so so kind. He brought out the best in his friends, and always challenged us to be better. So we are going to spend September doing the same, starting with a little exercise and fundraising for research. You can join Team by clicking the link below. It doesn't cost you anything to join our CCRF team and log your miles. Simply sharing Will's story, helps bring attention to the cause and supports other cancer families like ours.
