Trees as Spiritual Self-Portraits 🌳

Explore expressive art-making through a spiritual lens in this workshop. Learn more about the role of trees in art, scripture, and different cultures throughout history. Participants will create their own tree portrait using basic collage and mixed media processes with step by step guidance. No previous artistic experience required!

Faith + the Maker is happening on November 6—are you coming?

Old School Makerspace was founded with the belief that all people are made in the image of God and that creative expression is a reflection of that image. For this reason, the act of making is good in and of itself. However, there is more to it than simply the act of making. WHAT we make also matters.

In this Faith + the Maker session, we will consider the back to back narratives in Exodus of the plans for the tabernacle and the golden calf incident. These stories serve as an important warning and a divine invitation to all makers. To a greater or lesser extent, what we make either aids in the worship of God—or glorifies the lesser gods of this world. Join us as we grapple with and explore this important conversation together.

Your body is your most important art-making tool!

Join us October 21 for a movement class focused on preparing your body for the work of your craft with instructor Leslie Siegel.

We prep, clean and sharpen our tools for art-making, but the body is the tool that moves and masters all the others. This class will cover basic principles of alignment, core integrity, and flexibility. Special attention will be given to parts that are often placed in compromised positions during art-making, such as hands, wrists, shoulders, necks and backs.

Think of it as sharpening and caring for the tool that moves all your other tools. ✨

Did you know that using charcoal is one of the best ways to learn to draw?

Join us over the course of two sessions and learn from instructor Aaron Hollingsworth as he guides students in this important skill ✍️

October 7 and 14, 2026

In this course students will gain foundational drawing skills by using the medium of charcoal and referencing a still life. The course will be broken up into two sessions allowing for demos and in-studio practice. Students will leave with one completed charcoal drawing.

Learn the foundations of traditional hand tool woodworking through guided, hands-on practice. Participants will learn how to accurately measure, mark, and cut essential joinery using classic hand tools. Build a functional wooden tool tote while developing skills in cutting rabbet joints, plowing grooves, and forming mortise and tenon joints. Students will leave with a completed project and the confidence to work independently with hand tools.
