“The truth is that a piece of art which seems right in its finished state may earlier have been only minutes or seconds away from total collapse.”

What tells an artist their work is finished? Surrounded by first attempts, collected marks, incomplete gestural strokes, how does work move from what could be to what is—from possibility to finality? In the process of art making many potentials are gathered, ideas are brought, objects are filled with questions. But at some point the process terminates, conclusions are made, and potential realized. Maybe a more invigorating wondering is not how art making comes to a close, but why?

This is the invitation: curiosity, openness to ask not about production or process, but about meaning. Why is this work finished? Why were these conclusions drawn? What does it tell me? By giving attention to this work being “finished” as opposed to being “in progress” we can enter into a new experience of the artist's practice. We come to a new way of engaging these artworks; not merely as beautiful objects, but as intentional decisions.

In April, the team at Old School Makerspace brought together a group of local artists to show unfinished works in an exhibition called “How to Draw a Bird.”

Gathered together were:

notes on torn legal paper
ideas unrealized
raw gestural sketches
images and objects filled with invitation and possibility;

the curve of a river
a horse’s body
the reflection of a pool
or a vase
or a mirror

All of these pieces breathed life into the question of what could be. But in their incompleteness there is only the question, never a period; never the finality of a finished statement, only the first thought.

“How to Draw a Bird” was meant to reveal the artist’s process, the work that goes into making artworks, but it revealed only part of the process: the potential.

The next crucial step is the finish.

You have to stick the landing; the potential must be realized. Now, the team at Old School Makerspace is bringing together the same group of artists to do just that: to finish the conversation. Later this summer, their finished work will be revealed.

Join in on the conversation by coming out to the closing reception of the current exhibition on June 26th at 6:30pm and join us for the opening of the next installment later this summer!

🚨Class alert!!🚨

Explore the Japanese art of Haiku in a relaxed, supportive environment. Students will begin by learning a brief history of the tradition and reading examples of Haiku, after which each participant will write Haiku on several different topics. By the end of the class students will be comfortable expressing thoughts and images with essential words, and will be familiar with the rhythm of the traditional Haiku syllable structure. Students will also explore the corresponding art of Haiga: simple sketches to complement and respond to the Haiku.
