La Vernia Turtle and Tortoise Sanctuary

La Vernia Turtle and Tortoise Sanctuary La Vernia Turtle and Tortoise Sanctuary INC. is a Non-profit, 501(c)3 educational facility. LVTTS can help to re-home animals in need of a fantastic new family.

Matt and April Lopez have been raising turtles and tortoises since 2010 with the hopes of decreasing the negative impact the wild caught pet trade and importation of animals causes. In 2020 the LVTTS FB page was created to help educate on proper animal husbandry of various species of turtles and tortoises. Turtles and tortoises primarily call LVTTS their home but future plans include other types o

f reptiles. Animals that are being re-homed will not be assigned until proper housing conditions and husbandry knowledge is proven. Our missions are:

To end pet abuse, neglect, and misunderstanding by educating the community about proper care for exotic-endangered turtles and tortoises. Provide healthy and diverse species of turtles and tortoises through captive breeding programs to help reduce wild collected specimens in turn strengthening wild populations. Support USARK (United States Association of Reptile Keepers) through yearly monetary contributions and the sharing of important state to federal legislature effecting reptile keepers. Support TSA (Turtle Survival Alliance) through yearly monetary contributions and the sharing of important conservation efforts. Operate a facility available for the public to visit and interact with the animals in our care.

The littles are now taking moistened Mazuri well and throwing out some really nice growth lines too!
I just love their little food faces.
Did you know tortoises don’t chew their food? They swallow it whole.

A little update on our world traveler here……
Our missing Burmese mountain tortoise was found last week hiding under a pile of leaves right next door to our fence. He has some scrapes on his legs most likely from his escape act and freedom spree. He survived a couple of weeks with night time temps dipping below 32 degrees.

These tortoises are extremely resourceful and hardy animals. He scaled a 24” tall wall which is fairly surprising for how heavy bodied these guys are. Most likely he had help by climbing on top of another’s back. Either way; lessons learned and happy to have him back.

What should we name this guy? I’m thinking something that has to do with traveling, disappearing, or just being a butt head for worrying us so much!

Burmese brown mountain tortoise missing around CR 307.

Reward if found.

These guys are expert climbers and unfortunately one of my 3 adults escaped the winter enclosure. It is a male and they are pretty cold tolerant and will search out piles of leaves to keep warm. If you happen to see him cruising around a fence line please do pick him up. They don’t bite.
Thank you so much.
