The court in Buenos Aires on Friday overturned a previous decision not to pursue a case against State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and senior officers in the Myanmar military. Instead, it has requested more information from the International Criminal Court (ICC) to ensure that a case in Argentina would not duplicate other justice efforts, BROUK said in a statement.

The court has instead requested now more information from the International Criminal Court (ICC) to ensure that a case in Argentina would not duplicate other justice efforts, BROUK said in a statement yesterday.

On 13 November 2019, BROUK petitioned Argentinian courts to open an investigation into the role of Myanmar’s civilian and military leaders in committing genocide and crimes against humanity against the Rohingya.

DHAKA — An Argentine court has moved one step closer to opening a historic investigation against Myanmar's military and civilian leadership over the genocide against the Rohingya people, the

An elderly Rohingya refugee has become the first person to die from coronavirus in the world’s largest refugee settlement in Bangladesh, where there are fears the disease could spread fast due to overcrowding.

The 71-year-old man died on May 31 while undergoing treatment at an isolation centre at the camps where over a million Rohingya live, officials said.

Rohingya refugees have brought an economic boon for Bangladesh in multidimensional aspects. Because of them, many skilled and unskilled Bangladeshi people, especially women, have found their income sources. Positive contributions of the Rohingya should not be underestimated though these are less worthy if weighed against the overall drawbacks they have caused for the host nation. Since the Rohingya crisis is a protracted one having no possible certainty to be resolved soon, the government of Bangladesh needs not only to continue their diplomatic pressure against Myanmar but to focus on how effectively they can benefit from the displaced population in economic aspects.

It is generally perceived that refugees are curse for host countries though the former often play positive roles for the latter. The context of Bangladesh

The estimated 855,000 Rohingya refugees that currently reside in the southern region of Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh have been identified as highly vulnerable to COVID-19. Lessons from previous epidemic responses, as well as reports from other countries currently battling COVID-19 outbreaks, make it clear that safe and dignified burials are an essential component of containing the outbreak.

When journalists or advocates have confirmed cases of rights abuses against Rohingya or other civilians, the military has denied involvement. In late January, Reuters reported that the military had killed two Rohingya women and injured seven other civilians when it shelled Kin Taung in Rakhine. The military blamed the AA for the killing, saying at the time that “AA terrorists committed firing [sic] at Bengali villages with the use of heavy weapons and planting mines.” Weeks later, the military sued Reuters for the report, though it later dropped the case.

Myanmar recently sent its first report to the International Criminal Court on the steps it's taking to protect the Rohingya. The report isn't public, but Rohingya activists and rights advocates say ongoing violence and human rights abuses show Myanmar hasn't complied with the court's orders.

Burmese authorities are using COVID-19 response measures as a pretext to harass and extort Rohingyas and are doubling down on a system in which they are already effectively incarcerating the population. Rohingyas in the camps told Human Rights Watch that military and police forces regularly subject them to harassing physical punishment at checkpoints. One Rohingya woman said the police made her do sit-ups for 30 minutes for not wearing a mask through a checkpoint, after which she was too exhausted to move. Another man witnessed people being forced to perform squats at a checkpoint with their hands on their ears.

Burmese authorities are using COVID-19 response measures as a pretext to harass and extort Rohingyas.
