One minute, you’re relaxing at Ramstein Air Base, Germany. The very next, you get the call. A U.S. service member was injured hundreds of miles away, and it’s up to you to get them to the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center as soon as possible for treatment.
This is the reality for members of the 76th Airlift Squadron.
“The main mission that we do here is aeromedical evacuation,” said U.S. Air Force 1st Lt. Derek Gaskins, 76 AS C-21 aircraft commander. “People get injured at U.S. military installations around Europe [all the time]. In just a few hours, we can pick them up and bring them back to Ramstein, where they can get the best care.”

On August 29, the Minister President of Rhineland-Pfalz, Alexander Schweitzer (center right), visited the construction site of the new Rhine Ordnance Barracks Medical Center (ROBMC) being built near Ramstein Air Base.
The new ROBMC medical facility will be the largest and most modern U.S. military hospital outside the continental U.S. and is set to replace the existing Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and Ramstein 86th Medical Group Clinic. The new hospital will ensure continued U.S. readiness for rapid trauma care for warfighters in future contingencies while also providing warfighters and their families with modern, world-class healthcare facilities they deserve for years to come.

On the fourth anniversary of the terrorist attack at Abbey Gate on August 26, 2021, the Department of Defense pauses to honor the 13 brave U.S. service members who made the ultimate sacrifice during the U.S. military's withdrawal from Afghanistan. These heroes, selfless warriors who stood guard amidst chaos, lost their lives in a su***de bombing that also claimed approximately 170 Afghan civilians. Their valor and dedication to duty will forever inspire our nation, and we extend our deepest respect and gratitude to their families, whose enduring pain fuels our resolve to seek justice and truth.

Every year on August 7, America observes Purple Heart Day. For some, it’s just another commemorative date. For others—Veterans, families, and comrades—it’s a somber reminder of the cost of freedom. This small, purple-and-gold medal, bearing the profile of George Washington, is awarded to those wounded or killed while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. But to reduce it to just a medal is to misunderstand its gravity. The Purple Heart is not a decoration of valor—it is a recognition of sacrifice. It is not earned through triumph, but through trauma. It is awarded not with applause, but with reverence.

Every year on August 7, we observe Purple Heart Day. Join us as we honor their legacy and recognize their sacrifice.

LANDSTUHL, Germany — After 35 years in the Army, Col. Warren Stewart wasn’t expecting to make the first overseas move of his military career. But the former enlisted soldier, who spent three years deployed to Iraq as a trauma nurse, couldn’t turn down the opportunity to command Landstuhl Regional Medical Center.

Many of the wounded Stewart had helped save in the field were treated at LRMC, the Defense Department’s largest overseas hospital. “The one shiny beacon that was always the constant was Landstuhl,” he said. “We always knew that if we could get a soldier or airman or Marine ... back to Landstuhl, their chances of survival were almost 100%.
And that gave us hope.
