Please join us for the Made in Utah: Mid-Length Series, a evening that celebrates the incredible talent, creativity, and stories emerging from Utah. This event highlights exceptional films created by Utah filmmakers and producers, offering a platform to showcase unique voices from around the State and connect them to independent film loving audiences.

2026 Film Selections:

Fire Tender (dir. Roni Jo Draper & Marissa Lila), 27 min
A Yurok knowledge keeper seeks to return fire practices, and restore land and people.
Comfort Food (dir. Reena Dutt), 14:30 min
A widowed, Indian-American activist chef from Oakland meets her mother-in-law, a redneck Japanese-American drunk from the deep South. Will their battle to survive unbearable loss cause more pain…or stir up a healing pot of COMFORT FOOD?
The Book of George (dir. Danny Schmidt), 15 min
George McKenzie Jr. traded the hard streets and violence of New York City for a life photographing some of the most elusive animals in North America for National Geographic. His next mission? Empower kids of color to access their own dreams and to protect the natural world.
Following the showcase, stay for the panel discussion, Holding Space for Marginalized Voices, a conversation with the filmmakers behind this year’s selections as they discuss how they are using film and storytelling as tools for healing, advocacy and cross-cultural understanding. Panelists include Roni Jo Draper and Marissa Lila, co-directors and producers of Fire Tender; Danny Schmidt, director and producer of The Book of George; and Kirsten Spalding, executive producer of Comfort Food.

Filmmakers and film lovers are invited to mingle in the filmmaker lounge following the film screenings and panel.

WORK-IN-PROGRESS SCREENING: IN THE MOMENT
Coming up next week on Thursday, February 12th at 6:00pm at SLCC South City Campus Screening Room (1575 S State St, Salt Lake City, UT 84115) is our Work-in-Progress Screening of the documentary In the Moment: The Vicky Bradshaw Story directed by filmmaker Jen Banks.

In the Moment weaves together interviews and memories to chronicle a q***r woman's final chapter with ovarian cancer. Filmed two decades ago and brought forward as her lasting legacy, the film illuminates the universal questions of how we live, love and remember.

WIP Screenings are open to the public but seating is limited. Please let us know you are coming through event registration in the link in this post.

UDA's Work-in-Progress Screening Series is an opportunity for local documentary filmmakers to get feedback on their unfinished film during the critical stage of post-production. If you'd like to apply for an upcoming opportunity to screen your film, you can find out more at our website.

MAKE IT IN UTAH: PANEL & PARTY!
On Tuesday, January 27th at 6:30pm, we hope you'll join us for our Salt Lake City Sundance Send-Off and a frank and open discussion about the state of documentary filmmaking in Utah as we look forward to what's next for non-fiction filmmakers in our state.

We're partnering with the Documentary Producers Alliance and Salt Lake Community College to host a Panel Discussion and Mixer at the SLCC South City Campus.
