Hot House West // Salt Lake City, UT Hot House West is a music nonprofit 501(c)(3). We strive to create these opportunities both on and off the bandstand.

Mission Statement
Our purpose is to create experiences of connectedness, learning, and joy through the language of acoustic music. Vision Statement
We envision Salt Lake City as a hub for world class acoustic music. We accomplish this by building a healthy community-oriented ecosystem that’s accessible for all. We have four programs:
The Hot House West Swing Orchestra
The Trash Moon Collective
The Swing Collective
Westmoon Records

We accomplish the following objectives through each of these four programs:

EDUCATION

A strong and connected music scene starts with education. From elementary school students through adult beginners, from professionals to audience members — we are working to deepen our communities’ ties to music through continuing education on every level. MENTORSHIP

The best way to learn music is to play with more experienced players than yourself. By pairing aspiring musicians with veteran players we can create the highly impactful and deeply motivating musical experiences that start careers. OPPORTUNITY

We are creating opportunities to connect, learn, and progress that are accessible for all. We believe everyone should have opportunities to participate regardless of their experience, background, sexual-orientation, identity, religion, or color of their skin. COMMUNITY

Not everyone needs to aspire to be a professional musician. We aim to build a strong community through the connective and joyful power of music. We invite people to come as they are and find community in music. VISIBILITY

Through strong community engagement, excellent production and management, and a commitment to professionalism, we aim to put Utah on the map for having a top-tier music scene.

We’ve always loved breaking down the barrier between stage and audience. For this concert, we’re taking that connection even further: YOU will become part of the music itself. Together, we’ll bring a new work to life that builds on the swing and vibes you already know from Hot House West and carries it somewhere we haven’t been before.

THE MACHINE IS THE DANCER brings century-old poetry into conversation with our own lives, revealing how much we still share. We are both the machine and the dancer: in repetition and motion, in work and play, in what we make and what we become. There is struggle, beauty, and hope woven through the work with room for you to discover something new along the way.

Tickets are now LIVE for the world premiere of this new suite by Dr. David Ian Baker (David Baker), performed by the Hot House West Swing Orchestra.

One night only.

Join us as its first audience and as part of its first performance.

🎶 Listening Room No. 2

Jay McShann’s “Get Me On Your Mind” arranged by the one and only Archie Hall!

Mr. Hall was such a gifted arranger/orchestrator from Virginia/New York who took contracted arranging gigs for tons of bands. His early career put him in the writing chair for Kansas City’s own Jay McShann. Fun fact, that’s a young Charlie Parker on the recording!

From there he worked with legends Don Redman (of Fletcher Henderson/Benny Goodman fame) and Sy Oliver (of Jimmie Lunceford).

To me, he represents this great creative, orchestral approach to writing for a band that feels both small and intimate and also enormous. He leans into character for each section and knows when a solo voice is appropriate versus a section. He also has an amazing sensibility for getting the brass to be punchy and bouncy against a bed of woodwinds.

There’s nothing quite like a room full of people moving together.

Great music, great dancers, and the kind of energy that only happens when the band and the audience are part of the same thing.

That’s what we love about this music. It isn’t meant to sit still.

Next up in our 26-27 season is the world premiere of my original suite for the HHWSO: The Machine Is The Dancer. It’s an interactive multi-movement work where YOU are as much a part of the music as the swing orchestra. This will be a new step for the ensemble and I’m so excited to share it with you all! 🎶⚙️
