🌈 In Memory of Dexter "Dex" Falcor 🌈
Recently, the family of a dachshund named Dexter "Dex" Falcor reached out to Rocky Mountain Dachshund Rescue to share his story. While Dex was not an RMDR dog, he was born with Megaesophagus (ME), just like our foster dog Luna. After losing Dex to Aspiration Pneumonia (AP), his family found comfort in following Luna's journey and wanted to help support another ME dog facing similar challenges.
We were honored that they chose to share Dex's story with us.
Dex was adopted shortly after he was weaned and, despite the challenges that come with Megaesophagus, lived an incredible 10 years surrounded by love, devotion, and unwavering care from his family.
Recently, Dex lost his battle with Aspiration Pneumonia, one of the most serious complications associated with Megaesophagus. His story is a reminder of both the resilience of ME dogs and the dedication of the families who care for them.
His mom, Tara, shared this beautiful memory:
One of the things I'll always remember about him is that he never met a blanket he didn't want to burrow under—that is, unless I left the room. Then his favorite place was right by my side. Whenever I was home, he was my constant companion, following me from room to room and keeping me company through even the most ordinary moments of the day. The house feels much quieter without him.
Anyone who has loved a dachshund understands exactly what she means.
Dex leaves behind not only a grieving family, but also his canine companion, Izzy, who has been struggling with the loss of her best friend. The bond our dogs share with us, and with each other, is truly remarkable.
What touched us most was that while facing the heartbreak of losing Dex and the expense of emergency veterinary care, Tara and her family chose to make a donation to help support Luna's care. Their kindness in the midst of grief is a beautiful tribute to Dex's legacy and a reminder of the compassion that exists within the Megaesophagus community.
Please join us in remembering Dexter Falcor today. He was deeply loved, and his story will continue to inspire others navigating the challenges of Megaesophagus.
June is Megaesophagus Awareness Month, making Dex's story especially meaningful to share. Megaesophagus is a lifelong condition that affects a dog's ability to move food and water into the stomach, often requiring specialized feeding techniques, careful management, and constant monitoring. One of the most serious complications is Aspiration Pneumonia (AP), which occurs when food, water, or saliva enters the lungs and causes infection.
Thanks to the dedication of their families, many dogs with Megaesophagus can live happy and fulfilling lives. Dex's ten years are a testament to the love, commitment, and extraordinary care that ME families provide every day.
Run free, sweet Dex. Until we meet again at the Rainbow Bridge. ❤️🐾🌈
