No More DUI's

No More DUI's “Helping Prevent Future Tragedies” Why I do this: On May 29, 2004, I was travelling home from the lake with my wife and three young daughters.

Purpose: To significantly REDUCE the number of DUI’s in total, and more importantly, REDUCE the number of deaths and injuries due to DUI’s. A 17 year old girl, with a previous 100mph DUI, had her Dad buy her vodka, orange juice and beer and went to the lake. When her blood alcohol level reached .214, nearly 3 times the legal limit for an adult, she hit us at 95mph in a Yukon. My wife, Jada, took

her last breath in my arms that day, my daughters were screaming in pain, suffering multiple internal injuries, collapsed lungs, broken back, limbs and lacerations. I suffered a crushed ankle and severe blunt force trauma. The mental anguish and pain are more severe. The girl who hit us was not injured, but her 17 year old passenger died at the scene. Some of her earlier passengers got out of the SUV because they were afraid of how she was driving. She had said that she was going to “get drunk and drive like a beast”… mission accomplished. I wish one of them would’ve had the courage to have taken the keys from her. I have no "solution" for this, other than to help change the hearts and behaviors of those who don't see the dangers of driving under the influence. I've spoken to various groups, nearly 400 times over the years. If your group or business would like to have me speak, please message me. Please email me at [email protected]
Thanks,
Michael

Friends/Business owners here in eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas, it’s that time of year when I run my Sober Prom/Graduation Campaign on The Mix 105.1 and this year, also on Red Dirt 106.7. I briefly share my family’s story of being hit head on by a 17 year old drunk/high driver. Her 17 year old passenger and my wife were killed and my girls and I were severely injured. The story is important because it involves teenagers who drove impaired and one who died while riding with.
I follow it up listing the most caring sponsors who allow us to run hundreds of Announcements urging parents and teens to talk about expectations, rules, consequences. Teens, I guarantee your parents would rather get a call from you that the coroner. Parents… have that talk.
If you’d like to be a sponsor, please private message me.
Thank you!
Michael
p. s. If you have an organization who would like me to speak, please don’t hesitate to ask. 🙏🏽

I got over 50 reactions on my posts last week! Thanks everyone for your support! Please share my family’s story to your teens and friends and family who needs to hear that yes… it can happen to you. My family’s tragic story being shared has saved lives. Many people have told me they have stopped drinking or driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

As most of you know, while living in California, after the wreck that changed our lives, I had spoken about the dangers of driving while impaired and riding with a buzzed friend.
Here in eastern Oklahoma, near me, there are no MADD Chapters within about 170 miles. So, what I’ve done to help make a difference is I have conducted a Sober Prom / Sober Graduation Campaign on one of our radio stations here.
Recently, I was approached by a local agency that does great work with this issue and many others in the community. They have asked me to speak at an event and of course, I happily agreed. Many times, I told the Lord I’m getting exhausted sharing our story, and every time, someone would come up to me in a restaurant or the mall to let me know that because of my story, they had stopped drinking or stopped driving impaired. This happened dozens of times. I’ve said from nearly the beginning that I get paid in “Handshakes, Hugs & Tears”.
I only ask that you pray that I can deliver my speech in a manner that would change the hearts, minds and behaviors of all who listens.
Thank you and God Bless!

PLEASE read to the end! It’s VERY IMPORTANT! I’m very proud of the business community here in Eastern Oklahoma/Western Arkansas. I decided to create a Sober Graduation Radio Campaign, which will run several hundred times, leading up to Graduation Night, on The MIX 105.1. The message will blanket the area, covering 13 local high schools. My boss, Darren Girdner, was VERY supportive. I’m thankful to have had 41 sponsors of this very important message. A 17 year old drunk/high girl hit me, my three daughters and killed my wife and her 17 year old passenger. Her dad bought her the alcohol that day. It is very important for me and the folks at The MIX to reach these teens and their parents and hopefully save lives.
PLEASE support these local businesses who sponsored this vital campaign: Sweet Nana’s Donuts, Mark’s Machinery, J&D’s Steakhouse, MGS Construction, Sallisaw Lumber, Sallisaw Chamber of Commerce, Jodie Lee’s Furniture and Appliance, Oberste Insurance, Clif’s Pharmacy, Forever Memories Funeral Services, Crystal Stephens Sides, Rocky’s Corner Inc, Law Office of David A. The Two Trees
Michael Benge
I wrote this during our first Christmas season in 2004 after our family’s wreck when Jada was killed by a drunk driver. My girls and I were severely injured.
I hope it does two things... 1. Hopefully, make you consider not drinking. But if you do, please have a plan. Get a ride from a friend, Uber, Lyft or a cab. 2. Hug, kiss and tell your family and friends that you love and cherish them. Oh and 3. That you're at peace with the Lord.

Two Trees
By Michael Benge

Today should’ve been a thoroughly joyous day. My family put up our Christmas tree. Our family, like countless others, looks forward to the ritual of putting the lights on, placing the ornaments in just the right spots and especially the ones that were made with care over the years by my children… you know, the clay Gingerbread man with “Hannah, 12/95” on it, or the ceramic star with Hayley’s picture in the middle and with “Hayley 00” etched in the back with a toothpick or the popcicle stick Rudolph with “Maddie 2002” written so carefully on the back… yeah, those are the ones they wanted me to find. They told me, “Please look through the boxes, Daddy, we need to put on the ornaments with the memories in them.” “Mommy always wrapped those up special, so they won’t get broken.”
You see, this was usually my wife’s “job.” She loved to make hot chocolate, and have the girls place the ornaments while I watched with a huge smile on my face after setting up the tree. Every holiday was special to Jada, but Christmas… oh... that was the one she most looked forward to. She shopped for months, making sure that each girl got what she really wanted… it had to be perfect! On Christmas Day, my wife’s face would beam with happiness as each gift was opened. After the gifts were opened, we would be “showered” with hugs and kisses… the best part of it all.
This Christmas will be different… I’ll help more with the tree and forget the hot chocolate, of course. And I’ll do my best to get the gifts “just right”… the biggest difference, however, is that we’ll be decorating two trees this year… one for our home and one for Mommy, and place it at the cemetery, where we said our final goodbyes.
I wish this story was fiction, but it’s not. I can’t fulfill my children’s Christmas wish. I can’t bring their Mommy back. But maybe, with this story, I can help other families to not have to decorate two trees next Christmas.
If you’re reading this letter and it has touched your heart, please consider the following:
Please DON’T drive impaired.
Please have the strength to TAKE THE KEYS from someone who may drive under the influence. Please don’t text and drive.
Lastly, please pray for my family and all those who are without a loved one this holiday season. God Bless!
Michael

Friends, please be careful this Thanksgiving week! Please don't drive impaired. Please don't ride with anyone who has imbibed. Please take the keys from those who are buzzed. And... please report ANYONE who refuses to give up their keys. To love them is to protect them at any cost. Have a blessed Thanksgiving!

This Trooper literally put citizens lives ahead of his own by purposely hitting a drunk driver head on. The drunk driver was driving the wrong way and the Trooper took the hit so an innocent wouldn’t. Praying he survives! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Independence Day is near. A great day to honor those who gave all to gain and protect our freedom. However, it’s a day/weekend that many choose to over-indulge in drinking and drugs to “celebrate”. I pray you choose to stay sober and enjoy friends and family for this holiday and many to come. But, if you decide to partake in any of those activities, PLEASE don’t drive under the influence. It is not worth the risk... to you, to those you love, to your fellow citizens and their loved ones. My 3 girls and I barely survived a 95 mph head on collision with a drunk/high teenager. My wife was killed and I watched her take her last breath. The teen driver had a BAC of .214, nearly 3x the limit for an adult driver. Plus, her dad bought the vodka and beer that day. She also had w**d in her system.
If you’re hosting a party, PLEASE pool all of your guests’ keys and do not return them until they are sober. You’d be my hero. If you’re out, please call/use Uber, Lyft, a cab, a friend or family member or message me if you run out of options. Be safe. Keep others safe. And... God Bless America!
