Hello everyone,
We want to apologize for it being a while since we’ve held our meetings. We have been dealing with an influx of grievances coming from different apartment complexes, and we have been working hard behind the scenes to bring tenants together, address concerns, and find solutions. We understand that Facebook is a place where people come to vent, and there is nothing wrong with expressing your frustrations, but talk is cheap if we are not willing to take action. We can complain all day long about what is happening in our communities, but nothing will change unless we are willing to show up, speak up, and stand together. One person cannot change the narrative or fix the current situation alone. It takes all of us coming together, sharing our experiences, learning our rights, and holding the right people accountable. This work is not for the weak. It takes courage, consistency, patience, and commitment. If you truly want to see change, I encourage you to come to the meetings, because your voice matters, but your presence matters too. We can talk about change all day, but change starts when we show up and do the work together.

With temperatures climbing to dangerous levels, this heat is more than just uncomfortable, it can become a serious health risk, especially for children, seniors, people with disabilities, and anyone with medical conditions. No one should have to live in extreme indoor heat without safe living conditions.

If you live in low-income housing or a rental property and your home has become dangerously hot because there is no working air conditioning, don't suffer in silence. Speak up and report unsafe living conditions.

Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development Secretary Jake Day today announced that the Division of Just Communities has been selected to participate in the The Public Finance Initiative’s Rural and Small Cities Program, supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The competitive program supports government and quasi-governmental organizations to assess place-based challenges, understand options to finance investments over time, and develop actionable plans to achieve their goals through technical assistance and tailored capacity-building workshops. The program will support the Division of Just Communities as they advance innovative, people-centered investment strategies in rural communities and small cities.

As part of the cohort, the Division of Just Communities will receive targeted capacity building to co-create a shared, People-Centered Placemaking strategy for rural and small cities across Maryland state agencies to align resources and expand the impact of the State’s investments.

Under the leadership of Assistant Secretary Cat Goughnour, the Division of Just Communities is responsible for executing the goals of the 2024 Just Communities Act, targeting state investment in communities that have experienced decades of discriminatory policies like redlining, urban renewal projects, high incarceration rates and disproportionate exposure to environmental and health hazards. Using a racial equity and social justice framework, program evaluation, and community involvement, 419 of Maryland’s 1,463 census tracts are designated as Just Communities, representing 17 counties and the City of Baltimore.

We know some tenants received a letter from the property manager at Pemberton Manor apartments stating that they owe money due to Hud raising the rent, that isn't true. HUD did not raise the rent. They only updated the Fair Market Rent. These updates affect how much voucher assistance HUD will pay, but they don't force landlords to raise the rent. That is the landlord decision
