Celebrating Juneteenth: Black Power, Resistance & Resilience

In honor of Juneteenth, we’re highlighting a powerful collection of books that center Black voices, history, and the ongoing fight for freedom and justice. These reads remind us that resistance takes many forms—and that our stories matter.

Here are a few of our book club picks:

✊🏾 We Refuse: A Forceful History of Black Resistance — Kellie Carter Jackson

✊🏾 The 1619 Project — Nikole Hannah-Jones

✊🏾 Rest Is Resistance: A Manifesto — Tricia Hersey

✊🏾 Meridian — Alice Walker

✊🏾 Freedom Is a Constant Struggle — Angela Davis

✊🏾 Assata: An Autobiography — Assata Shakur

✊🏾 The Revisioners — Margaret Wilkerson Sexton

✊🏾 Burn Down Master’s House — Clay Cane

✊🏾 The Black Jacobins — C.L.R. James

✊🏾 Stamped from the Beginning — Ibram X. Kendi

Whether you’re revisiting a classic or picking up something new, we hope these books spark reflection, conversation, and inspiration.

Seasoned Stories is a book club event that brings Black foodways to the table—literally and literarily.

Bring 1–2 of your favorite Black-centered cookbooks or culinary reads for a fun show-and-tell as we honor the authors, the innovators, and keepers of the culture.

We’ll gather at Fleming Street Bakery & Southern Cuisine, a Black woman-owned restaurant, support a local business, and enjoy lunch together as we celebrate the foods, recipes, and stories that have seasoned our lives.

Please join us for this empowering, educational, and community-centered event designed to address the unique experiences Black women face during perimenopause and menopause. This transformative gathering will create a safe and affirming space where Black women can openly learn about and discuss hormonal health, aging, mental wellness, and healthcare inequities while gaining practical tools for self-advocacy and wellness. This event seeks to confront these disparities head-on by bringing together physicians, a mental health professional, and the community to provide culturally responsive education and resources tailored specifically to Black women’s lived experiences.

This is a movement toward health equity, education, and empowerment. By centering Black women’s voices and experiences, this event aims to break the silence surrounding menopause, reduce stigma, and ensure Black women receive the compassionate, informed, and equitable care they deserve. Through education, advocacy, and community connection, this event will help Black women reclaim ownership of their health journeys and thrive through every stage of midlife and beyond.

Honoring Our Educators
Behind every great leader, thinker, and creator is an educator who believed in them.

The Salisbury Alumnae Chapter salutes our educators for their tireless work. As Nelson Mandela famously stated: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

We are honored to recognize those who dedicate their lives to this mission. Thank you for making a difference!
