CreatureKind Engaging Christians in new ways of thinking about Christian faith for Animals, Peoples, and the Earth

Our Mission:
CreatureKind’s mission is to advance collective liberation — for animals, peoples, and the earth — with a special focus on farmed animals and food systems. We encourage and equip Christians to embody the interdependence of God’s whole Creation by creating educational and worship resources, and curating sacred spaces for spiritual formation, leadership development, and community change

-making. Our Vision:
We envision a world that affirms all creatures are beloved and valuable, just as they are seen by their Creator. We envision a world where followers of Jesus live in deep connection, increasing curiosity, and mutual relationship with fellow creatures. We envision those currently on the margins being centered, fully able to exist with self determination and radical belonging. We envision a Church that partners with the Creator and all of Creation to dismantle oppression for humans, non-humans, and the earth. We envision a diverse community of resistance where love, joy, and compassionate action abound as we anticipate the peaceable kin_dom of God.

You may have noticed that CreatureKind had a period of inactivity recently. We wanted to be in touch to let you know what's been going on. So on behalf of the Board, David has recorded this video message for CreatureKind's supporters.

CreatureKind is now operating in an interim phase. We are grateful to have secured a small amount of funding for the next few months to allow us to keep the organisation running with a small number of hours from Tasha Edwards as Interim Operations and Program Director. We have completed the transition to a new website (still at https://becreaturekind.org) that gives expression to the work the Board has done renewing our mission and vision: do visit to take a look. And you will have seen that we are piloting a new DefaultVeg Congregations program mentoring a cohort of representatives of local churches to effect food policy changes. Alongside this work we are exploring new strategic funding options.

As a Board, we are passionately convinced that CreatureKind still has a unique and urgently needed role to play in working for justice and joy for all God's creatures by transforming Christian attitudes and practices toward animals through advocacy and education. If you share this vision, we hope you'll continue as supporters of CreatureKind through this challenging time. We would particularly value new monthly donors whose gifts will help us plan for the future of the organisation. If you can help us with a monthly or one-off gift today, please donate via the website.

We are so grateful for all the supporters of CreatureKind who value the work we have done over the past decade since our foundation. Discovering how many Christians share our vision has been the chief encouragement for our work together.

Could your church become one of the first DefaultVeg Congregations?

CreatureKind is piloting a new program called DefaultVeg Congregations where we encourage local church communities to make changes towards plant-based foods in the food they serve. CreatureKind will mentor representatives from DefaultVeg Congregations in how to work for change in their local churches to align their faith commitment with the food served at church.

If you or someone you know has the potential to in our first cohort of CreatureKind DefaultVeg Fellows and work for food changes in a local church, we want to hear from you. Learn more and apply to be part of the pilot program. Deadline: Earth Day, April 22

Back in May, CreatureKind presented at The Animal & Vegan Advocacy Summit!

We loved connecting with our colleagues, learning from other organizations, and continuing to show up for the liberation of animals farmed for food.

I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh | Acts 2:17

Today is a day many of us remember the day of Pentecost. We remember the Spirit of God poured out on all flesh and how God’s intention has always been intimacy with Creation.

On this day we remember that God has not left us to fend for ourselves, but Creator knew we would need help, we would need a counselor, and a friend as we walk this road where we seek justice and liberation for all animals, peoples, and the earth.

We remember we walk with the certainty we’re never alone, that we are partnering in the beautiful work of Spirit to care for non-human animals because Spirit is found there, in their suffering, in their experience, and the short lives they now live due to the industrial farming industry.
The Spirit of God is not afraid to join in with Creation in every part of our lives. She is here to comfort us, human and non-human alike. She is here to remind us to keep going. We are so thankful for the Day of Pentecost.

On the Seventh Sunday of Easter, we remember that the Living God is not hiding from us as we continue to show up for justice and liberation for our human and non-human kind. Even when we can't see Them at work, let's remember that maybe God isn't in just one place; maybe God is in every corner, every creature, every act of justice and mercy.

On the Sixth Sunday of Easter, we reflect on the words of the Psalmist. Remembering God is paying attention to the cries of the ones who experience oppression and silencing under the capitalistic systems that continue to take so much life from us.

May we be comforted in Creator's love for human and non-human life.

Amidst scarcity, Jesus offers abundance. As we celebrate the fifth Sunday of Easter, let's reflect on the promise of the risen Lamb, who attends to our hunger, thirst, and the scorn of heat. In a world grappling with food scarcity, drought, and climate change let us remember the living waters. Let's continue to work towards a world where ecological justice flows like a river, ensuring abundance for all.

Spring is here in the global north! The soil is fertile, the mornings are longer, the birds are louder, and the farmers markets are getting ready for the warmer months ahead. Access to fresh fruits and vegetables and the means to prepare them is part of being able to eat a nourishing vegan diet. If you are interested in bringing plant-based education to your church or community, CreatureKind created this free vegetable guide so everyone can have the knowledge needed to prepare vegetables this season.

Between Easter and Pentecost, we're reminded of the power of resurrection amidst oppressive systems. Resurrection power isn't about wielding control but choosing abundant life for all beings. Let's love with the humility to learn from those who suffer under unjust dominion, working towards justice in our communities and healing for the earth.

Join Megan Grigorian at the AVA Summit US on May 16-19, 2024 for a panel conversation!

Leaders of CreatureKind, Dharma Voices for Animals, Green Islam, Jewish Initiative for Animals, and Unitarian Universalist Animal Ministry, all of which influence religious movements from the inside, discuss how to work respectfully with religious communities to transform traditions and build compassion, respect, and justice for other animals. These five organizations have different approaches to engaging communities of faith around animal ethics, community food practices, and veganism. But they are united in successfully framing animal protection as an urgent, authentic outgrowth of core religious values.
