24-year old Salem, New Hampshire native Daniel Webster Kelly enlisted in neighboring Methuen, MA, and was mustered in on July 5th, 1861, as a member of Co. B, 14th Massachusetts Infantry (reorganized as the 1st Mass Heavy Artillery in Jan '62). During the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House on May 19th, 1864, the regiment was again used as infantry. Corporal Kelly was mortally wounded during this engagement, and died on board the steamer State of Maine while en route to the Armory Square Hospital in DC. Here we have the gravestone of Tobias Stackpole, Civil War veteran of the 14th Massachusetts Infantry (later 1st Mass Heavy Artillery) and US Navy, buried in Pine Grove Cemetery, Salem, NH. Due to the stone being loose and unstable, it cannot be scrubbed, so instead was soaked with D/2 cleaner (back in Sept '23) and left alone. Brothers from Sleeper Camp #60 visited him today, and found he is cleaning up nicely!

Recently added John Colby Haines of the 12th Maine Infantry to the list of Civil War veteran stones in Pine Grove Cemetery, Salem, NH (80 names now recorded). He does have a GAR marker and flag, but it is on the opposite side of the stone (the Russ and Sargent names on that side were not veterans). The Haines grave also makes our "to be cleaned" list.
