The Museum is dedicated to teaching members of all races and cultures the inherent worth and dignity of human life to prevent future genocides. The Florida Holocaust Museum honors the memory the millions of men, women and children who suffered or died in the Holocaust. The Museum is dedicated to teaching members of all races and cultures the inherent worth and dignity of human life in order to pre

vent future genocides. One of the largest Holocaust museums in the country, the Florida Holocaust Museum is the result of St. Loebenberg’s remarkable journey and vision. Loebenberg escaped N**i Germany in 1939 and served in the United States Army during World War II. Together with a group of local businessmen and community leaders, the concept of a living memorial to those who suffered and perished was conceived. Among the participating individuals were Survivors of the Holocaust and individuals who lost relatives, as well as those who had no personal investment, other than wanting to ensure that such atrocities could never again happen to any group of people. The group enlisted the support of others in the community and were able to involve internationally renowned Holocaust scholars. Thomas Keneally, author of Schindler’s List, joined the Board of Advisors and Elie Wiesel was named Honorary Chairman. The Museum played a critical role in shaping legislation that in 1994 made Florida one of the first states in the nation to mandate Holocaust education in public schools from kindergarten through 12th grade. The Museum and the Pinellas County School System worked together to create guidelines for K-12 teachers. The guidelines include grade-appropriate instructional goals and bibliography for teaching the Holocaust. These guidelines are used by teachers throughout the nation as well as in Florida.

Today, we honor the life of Elie Wiesel on his tenth Yahrzeit, also known as the tenth anniversary of his passing in the Hebrew calendar.

In the ten years since Professor Wiesel’s passing, his lessons have only grown more important. Read the Op-Ed by Michael Igel, FHM Board Member and Chair of the Wiesel Archive & Legacy Council, to learn more about Wiesel's legacy: https://www.jns.org/opinion/mike-igel/elie-wiesel-at-10-years-the-defiance-of-hope

As a part of teaching the inherent worth and dignity of human life, we are deeply committed to eradicating antisemitism, but unfortunately still see the signs of it every day.

The Butterfly Project | July 26, 2026

We're partnering with The Butterfly Project to invite youth ages 9 and up to a powerful intergenerational program at Menorah Life.

On Sunday, July 26 from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., participants will join Menorah Life residents to paint ceramic butterflies. Each butterfly is a beautiful memorial to a child who perished in the Holocaust. When completed, all butterflies will be assembled into a permanent commemorative mural displayed at Menorah Life.

The program begins with a brief, age-appropriate documentary to provide gentle historical context, then moves into the hands-on painting experience.

$8 per butterfly | Ages 9+
Menorah Life, St. Petersburg | Sunday, July 26 | 2:00–4:00 p.m.

Today is Holocaust Survivor Day.

The FHM was founded by Survivors who believed in the importance of telling the stories of the Holocaust. We're honored to share their stories every day through exhibitions, educational programming, and events.

Thank you to each and every Holocaust Survivor that who has walked through our doors, spoken to students, and shared their truth with the world.

"We can't let the world forget what happened. When we see injustice we must not look the other way." —René Konigberg Hammond, 2001

René Hammond was born in Uzhorod, Czechoslovakia and grew up with one brother and one sister in a middle class family.

On May 16, 1944, her family endured a three-day train transport to Auschwitz, where her parents died.

From there, she was sent to work at the Essen and Krup factories, cleaning debris from bombings. Along with five other girls, René escaped and hid in a destroyed Jewish cemetery.

A German man brought them food and water, and eventually hid them in a cottage in Essen until liberation by the United States Army. She married an American soldier and came to the United States in 1948.

René has five children, ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
