Tomorrow is Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day and the centerpiece of our fifth birthday campaign. We are asking our community to give $5—or any multiple of five—tag five friends and share one memory or bucket-list dream. Small gifts become powerful when a community moves together.

Living with MBC can mean transportation costs, missed work, childcare, meals, insurance battles, fatigue and constant appointment logistics. The National Cancer Institute calls treatment-related financial distress “financial toxicity.” It can affect quality of life and even whether patients take medication as prescribed.

Support patients directly. Offer a ride, a meal, flexible work, a travel scholarship—or an uncomplicated moment of joy.

The American Cancer Society projects 42,670 breast cancer deaths in the United States in 2026: 42,140 women and 530 men. That equates to 117 deaths per day! Behind each estimate is a person, a family and an unfinished future. Pink awareness must make room for the reality of mortality—and for the research capable of changing it.

Share the number. Then help change the number.

Metastatic breast cancer includes different subtypes, commonly described by hormone receptor and HER2 status. Tumors can also change over time, which is why biomarker testing and sometimes repeat biopsy matter. Research is increasingly focused on matching treatments to the biology of each person’s cancer and understanding why a treatment stops working.

Personalized treatment requires personalized research. Keep funding both.

Breast cancer is not exclusively a women’s disease. The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 0.5% to 1% of breast cancers occur in men. Men may face delayed recognition, isolation and stigma because breast cancer messaging often excludes them.

Include men in the conversation. Symptoms deserve evaluation regardless of gender.

Targeted therapies, immunotherapies, antibody-drug conjugates and new combinations exist because researchers asked better questions and patients joined clinical studies. Research is not abstract. It is the bridge between today’s options and the next treatment a patient may need.

Fund the next option before someone you love runs out of options.

People living with MBC are parents, partners, friends, professionals, advocates and adventurers. MBC Travelers creates meaningful travel experiences and a community where patients do not have to explain the realities of Stage IV disease. A trip cannot cure cancer. It can restore connection, joy and a sense of possibility while research works toward more tomorrows.

Many people with metastatic breast cancer remain in treatment for the rest of their lives, moving from one therapy to another as long as it controls the cancer and side effects remain manageable. Treatment may include hormone therapy, targeted therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation, or combinations based on tumor biology and where the cancer has spread.

Support is not only needed at diagnosis. Show up for the long haul.

A pink ribbon can be a marketing symbol without being a meaningful contribution. Before buying, ask: Which organization receives the money? How much from each purchase is donated? Is there a maximum donation? Has that cap already been reached? Is the company transparent about where the funds go? If the answer is vague, donate directly to a trusted organization.

The five-year relative survival rate for female breast cancer is 100% when diagnosed at the localized stage. When the disease is distant or metastatic, it is 33.8%. These statistics describe populations, not the future of any one person. But the gap is a flashing warning sign: we need more effective treatments that prevent spread, overcome resistance and protect quality of life.
