Florida's native plants and wildlife have spent thousands of years evolving together, and the elderberry is one of the best examples of that relationship in action. Its flowers feed native bees and butterflies at the height of summer, and its berries sustain birds through the late season when other food sources are scarce. Plant one and you're not just adding something beautiful to your yard, you're plugging into an ecosystem that has been working long before we got here!

Read our blog at the link in bio to learn how to grow your own Florida elderberry 🌱

Thank you to everyone who came out to Wildflower Workshop! We loved seeing so many members of our community come together to learn how we can create beautiful, sustainable landscapes that support Florida’s native plants and wildlife. πŸ’š

A huge thank-you to Doris Heitzmann and UF/IFAS Extension Pinellas County for sharing your expertise and helping us better understand the ecosystems that make Pinellas County unique and how we can bring those principles into our own yards.

And thank you to our amazing partners, St. Pete Eco Club and Golden Isles Brewing Co., for helping make the evening possible! 🍻🌿

The American Persimmon tree is one of Florida's most delightful native surprises. At first glance it may look like just another woodland tree, but in the fall it transforms into a wildlife buffet and a sweet seasonal treat for those who know when to harvest it. This hardy native species thrives across Florida's diverse habitats, supporting local ecosystems while requiring very little long-term maintenance.

Learn more about the persimmon and other Florida native plants in our Rooted in Florida guidebook, available now at Tombolo Books, Book & Bottle, Boyd Hill Nature Preserve, Seaside Seabird Sanctuary, and online are wearemar.org/shop!

Capture Florida's wild side πŸ“Έ

MAR is celebrating Florida's native wildlife with our first-ever Wild Native Florida Photo Contest, and we want to see it through your lens.

Submit your best shot of Florida's native species (panthers, birds, native plants, anything wild and native to the Sunshine State) for a chance to be featured in our official 2027 wall calendar. Twelve photos will be selected by our judging panel, with the top entry gracing the calendar cover.

Our panel includes conservation photographer, National Geographic Explorer, and documentary storyteller George McKenzie Jr., who has spent his career using photography to connect people with the natural world.

What's at stake:
πŸ† Grand Prize: $500 cash & calendar cover placement
πŸ“… 11 Finalists featured in the 2027 calendar

Every entry helps support MAR's mission and every calendar sold funds our work connecting people with nature across Florida.

Entries open July 28 and close August 24. Judging wraps by early September, with winners notified by September 9.
