ReCreate Peace: Ending Violent Cycles

ReCreate Peace: Ending Violent Cycles Provide our communities with a proactive path to promote peace, invest in each other, build power and find a common unity against violence.

ReCreate Peace

This year started out in a very tumultuous manner. In the midst of the 2011-2012 holiday season tragedy struck. A three year old boy named Terrell Mayes was shot a killed by a stray bullet while climbing the stairs of his North Minneapolis home. Just a few months later, again a young child’s life was taken by a stray bullet. Nizzel George was just five years old when a bullet pene

trated his home while he was sleeping, ultimately claiming the young child’s life. With the communal tragedy came tough political fights at the state capitol. The “Shoot First” bill passed both houses of the legislature. This bill was not only a state wide issue, but also at the center of the national spotlight. Fueled by the murder of Treyvon Martin, “Shoot First” endured heavy scrutiny and was the subject of many of debates. Thanks to strong values, Governor Dayton vetoed the bill. Protect Minnesota’s ReCreate Peace: Ending Violent Cycles campaign started in a church basement in North Minneapolis. Frustrated, yet hopeful, a group of ten volunteers and a community organizer came together to, “provide our communities with a proactive path to promote peace. Renew our commitment to investing in each other, building power and finding a common unity against violence.”

“This work was created by a group of dedicated, concerned and passionate individuals. Their commitment to creating safe, non-violent neighborhoods gives great hope to this city.” To find out more find us on Facebook: ReCreate Peace: Ending Violent Cycles.
