It’s a bird…it’s a butterfly…it’s a Hummingbird Clearwing Moth (Hemaris thysbe)! It’s easy to see how a fast moving moth that’s active during the daytime could be mistaken for a hummingbird. If they stop beating their wings, you can also see where the ‘Clearwing’ name comes from. The clear patch on the fore- and hindwings comes from a region lacking scales on each wing. These moths are found across the eastern and central United States where they feed on the nectar of plants such as scarlet beebalm (Monarda didyma) and honeysuckles (Lonicera spp.). Laura Hair, Clemson 4H, and her son, Landon, Mrs. Marapally, St M K8 Green Steps Teacher, and Mary Dixon, Calhoun Soil and Water, cleaned the invasive cat tails and vines in and around the water garden today- yes we got a little wet! We also w**ded the school vegetable garden. We were happy to get things ready for the students returning soon. We can't wait to plant some fun veggies and flowers. Big thanks to Landon for the fantastic w**d eating!
